Chapter 5 - Justice in the Federal CourtThe federal district courtroom in lower Manhattan was packed to maximum capacity. Flashbulbs blinded defendants and attorneys alike on the courthouse steps, and news vans from every major network lined Foley Square, broadcasting the final chapter of the Hale family saga to millions of viewers nationwide.

Inside the soaring, oak-paneled courtroom, Judge Marcus Vance presided with stern, unyielding dignity.
At the defense table sat Daniel Hale and Eleanor Hale. Both wore coarse orange jumpsuits several sizes too large. Gone were the designer suits, the arrogant smirks, and the untouchable social status that had insulated them for a lifetime. Daniel looked ten years older, his hair unwashed, his shoulders slumped in total defeat. Eleanor sat rigidly upright, her face hardened into a mask of bitter, unrepentant fury, glaring across the courtroom toward the gallery.
In the front row of the gallery, sitting comfortably beside Marcus Reed and a team of federal prosecutors, was Clara.
She wore a classic navy-blue dress, her expression serene, untouchable, and utterly detached. She didn't look at Daniel or Eleanor with hatred or anger. Hatred required an emotional investment, and they simply didn't matter anymore. They were closed chapters, legal errors that had been permanently corrected.
“All rise for the sentencing of Daniel Hale and Eleanor Hale,” the bailiff announced loudly.
Judge Vance entered from chambers, adjusting his black robes before taking his seat behind the mahogany bench. He looked down at the defendants with cold, judicial contempt.
“Mr. Hale, Mrs. Hale,” the judge begin, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. “You engineered a systematic campaign of financial fraud, corporate embezzlement, and calculated attempted murder. You believed your wealth, your social standing, and your family name would protect you from the consequences of your actions. You preyed upon someone you mistakenly believed was vulnerable, weaponizing her physical disability and attempting to take her life in her own home.”
Daniel squeezed his eyes shut, his hands trembling violently in his lap.
“For the crimes of conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, interstate financial forgery, and vehicular assault,” Judge Vance continued, bringing his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack, “I sentence Daniel Hale to twenty-six years in federal custody at USP Florence. I sentence Eleanor Hale to thirty years at FCI Danbury without the possibility of parole. Court is adjourned.”

The heavy marshals stepped forward immediately, grabbing Daniel and Eleanor by the arms and hauling them backward through the security doors. Daniel let out a muffled, desperate sob, while Eleanor shouted obscenities at the bench until the heavy steel doors slammed shut behind them, cutting them off from the world forever.
Claire didn't watch them leave. She simply closed her leather portfolio, turned to Marcus with a soft, genuine smile, and walked out into the brilliant New York sunlight.
