Chapter 4 - Infiltration and Exposure

The tactical officers froze, their assault rifles leveled at Brian’s chest. The air in the underground laboratory grew deathly still, broken only by the hum of the surveillance computers and the frantic ticking of a wall clock.
I stepped forward from behind the line of armed agents, pushing past the barricade of shields.
Brian’s eyes widened as he saw me. He looked at my face, at the way I walked without hesitation, at the fierce, unyielding light in my eyes. For a man who had spent ten years believing his chemical cage was inescapable, seeing me stand upright and completely cured was more terrifying than a dozen armed federal agents.
“Natalie,” Brian breathed, his voice trembling. “How... how are you seeing me? The drops... the surgery shouldn't have worked.”
“You thought you were a god, Brian,” I said, my voice echoing off the cold stone walls. “You thought you could play doctor, judge, and executioner with women’s lives. But science caught up to your little chemistry experiment. And your secrets caught up to you.”
“Don’t move!” Brian yelled, pressing the needle deeper into Emily’s skin. A tiny bead of blood welled up on her neck. “I mean it, Natalie! Tell these cops to drop their weapons, or I swear to God I’ll finish what I started with your sister twenty years ago!”
Emily stirred, lifting her head. Her eyes, bloodshot and exhausted, locked onto mine.
“Natalie?” she whispered, her voice cracked from days of dehydration. “You... you can see me?”
“I can see you, Em,” I called out softly, keeping my eyes locked on her while slowly, deliberately sliding my hand into my tactical coat pocket. “And I’m not going anywhere.”
Brian was sweating profusely now, his eyes darting toward the hidden steel exit door behind the laboratory desk. He knew the federal perimeter was locked down. He knew the maritime escape route was blocked. He was cornered, and a cornered predator is at its most dangerous.
“It was your father’s idea,” Brian blurted out, his voice cracking with hysterical self-preservation. “Arthur planned the whole thing! He told me how to dose you! He gave me the medical supplier lists! I was just protecting our marriage, Natalie! He’s the one who wanted Rebecca dead!”
“I know all about my father, Brian,” I replied calmly. “He’s currently sitting in a federal holding cell waiting to rot. You don't have an accomplice left to blame.”
Brian’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. “Then we’ll all go down together!”
He raised the syringe, his thumb pressing down on the plunger.
In that split second, my training—honed by the very detective father who had betrayed me—kicked in. I didn't reach for a gun. I reached for the master override switch of the facility’s overhead sprinkler system, located right beside the doorway.
With a hard slap of my palm, I triggered the system.
CLANG-HISS!
Ice-cold water rained down from the ceiling jets with blinding pressure, instantly soaking the laboratory, short-circuiting the computer monitors, and turning the concrete floor into a skating rink of slick water.
Brian slipped, his footing giving way as the heavy stream of water slammed into his face. The syringe flew from his hand, clattering harmlessly across the wet floor.
Before he could recover his balance, three tactical officers surged forward like a tidal wave. They tackled him to the ground, slamming his face into the concrete and securing heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

I didn't wait to watch him scream. I rushed past the struggling officers, pulled out my combat knife, and sliced through the zip-ties binding Emily’s wrists.
“You’re safe, Em,” I whispered, pulling my sister into my arms as she wept against my shoulder. “It’s over. You’re finally free.”
