Chapter 2 - The Uninvited Guest

The double doors of the chapel swung open just as the string quartet began the first notes of the bridal march. The crowd turned, expecting to see Celeste step into the aisle.

Instead, they saw me.

The silence that rolled through the chapel was instantaneous, dropping over the two hundred guests like a heavy velvet curtain. The low murmur of whispers died in throats. The society columnists dropped their pens.

Grant’s smile froze. He stood at the altar, his hands coming down to his sides, his chest tightening beneath his bespoke tuxedo. His eyes moved from my face to the baby cradled against my chest, and then to the heavy white envelope in my hand.

"Clara?" his voice echoed sharply through the vaulted ceiling. "What the hell is this? Security—"

"Don't bother, Grant," I said, my voice steady, carrying perfectly through the quiet room as I walked down the center aisle. My heels clicked rhythmically against the polished marble floor. "Your security team is currently being replaced by the property management firm that actually owns the Rosewood Estate. It turns out their corporate lease was funded by the Mercer Hale Trust—my trust."

Vivian stepped forward from the front pew, her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. "How dare you drag that child here to make a scene! You signed the papers, Clara! You’re nothing but a bitter, discarded woman. Get out before we have you arrested for trespassing!"

"I didn't sign the property settlement, Vivian," I said, stopping exactly ten feet from the altar. "I only signed the receipt of service. Which means Grant’s asset claims have been sitting in a legal void for the last six months."

Celeste clutched her bouquet tighter, her face draining of color as she looked at the two process servers who had followed me down the aisle. "Grant... make her leave. She’s ruining my day. Think of the baby. Think of your son!"

"That's the interesting thing, Celeste," I said, turning my gaze to her, my eyes locking onto her trembling hands. "I am thinking of the baby. In fact, I brought a little wedding gift to ensure his future is perfectly documented."

I stepped up to the altar, completely ignoring the minister who looked as if he wanted to vanish behind the altar cloth. I placed the sealed envelope directly onto the heavy wooden podium between Grant and Celeste.

"Open it, Grant," I whispered. "Before you vow to give this woman everything my father built for you."
