Chapter 4 - The Arraignment and Public ExposureTwo days later, I was discharged from the hospital and taken directly to a secure, undisclosed location arranged by my sister and her legal contacts. My physical body was battered and healing slowly, but my mind was sharper and more focused than it had ever been.

The preliminary arraignment for Daniel Sterling was scheduled for Friday morning at the county municipal courthouse. Despite my physical discomfort, I insisted on attending. I needed to look him in the eye and show him that the woman he tried to break was standing tall.
When we arrived at the courthouse, the media circus outside was staggering. News vans lined the curb, cameras flashed blindingly, and reporters shouted questions over the metal barricades. Word of a prominent real estate heir being arrested for brutal domestic violence and the loss of his unborn child had leaked to the press, turning the case into a headline-catching scandal across the state.
As we walked up the stone steps escorted by court bailiffs, I caught a glimpse of Daniel being led from a transport van in handcuffs.
He looked entirely different from the immaculate, arrogant man who had handed down rules in our kitchen. His designer suit was wrinkled, his dark hair was uncombed, and the arrogant smirk that usually defined his face had been replaced by a look of stunned disbelief. When his eyes locked onto mine through the crowd of reporters, I saw genuine panic flare in his gaze. He hadn't believed I would actually go through with it. He truly thought I would protect him out of fear.
Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Judge Aris Thorne, a no-nonsense magistrate known for his intolerance of violent crime, presided over the bench.
Harrison Vance, sweating slightly under the media scrutiny, stood beside Daniel and immediately filed a motion for bail reduction, arguing that my claims were unverified and that Daniel posed no flight risk.
“Your Honor,” Vance argued passionately, “my client is a respected local businessman whose life and reputation are being dismantled by unverified domestic accusations stemming from a tragic medical accident.”
The prosecutor—a sharp woman named Sarah Lin, whom our cousin had recommended—stepped forward with a heavy black binder.
“Your Honor, the State moves to deny bail entirely,” prosecutor Lin said firmly, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtroom. “We are not dealing with a simple domestic dispute. We are presenting medical evidence of systematic physical torture, severe spinal trauma, and ligature marks consistent with prolonged suspension from a structural beam. Furthermore, we have an explicit audio-visual and verbal confession recorded by medical staff in which the defendant stated: ‘I did what I had to do. She knew how important a son was.’”
A collective murmur rippled through the gallery. Judge Thorne silenced the room with a single sharp rap of his gavel.
The judge looked down from the bench, staring over his reading glasses directly at Daniel. “Mr. Sterling, is this statement accurate? Did you make that confession to the attending physician?”
Daniel swallowed hard, glancing desperately at his attorney before looking up at the bench. He opened his mouth to speak, but the practiced confidence was entirely gone. “I... Your Honor, she was hysterical. She fell, and I was just trying to make her understand—she provoked me—!”
“That is not a denial,” Judge Thorne interrupted coldly, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “Bail is denied. The defendant is remanded to the custody of the county detention center without the option of bond, pending a grand jury indictment for aggravated domestic torture, kidnapping, and involuntary termination of a pregnancy.”

As the bailiffs stepped up behind Daniel and snapped the handcuffs tighter before leading him away through the side door, he cast one final, desperate look toward my seat in the gallery.
I didn't flinch. I didn't smile. I simply stared back at him with absolute, unyielding indifference. The monster who had locked me in a cage was now locked in one himself.
