Chapter 2 - The Fire of Truth

The lobby of the St. Regis was a chaotic sea of flashing red-and-blue lights, shouting journalists, and bewildered gala attendees in tuxedoes and evening gowns.

Two detectives from the County Sheriff’s Department stepped forward as Brett, Eleanor, and Tessa were escorted out of the ballroom by hotel security.

"Brett Keene?" Detective Vance, a stern woman with steel-gray hair and an uncompromising posture, stepped into his path, pulling a leather badge from her coat pocket. "You are under arrest for reckless endangerment, willful abandonment under life-threatening conditions, and filing false emergency reports. You have the right to remain silent..."

"This is an outrage!" Eleanor raged, her voice echoing off the marble pillars of the hotel lobby as a second officer handcuffed her wrists behind her back. "Do you have any idea who we are? My late husband built the municipal library! Call our lawyer immediately!"

"You're also being held for questioning regarding wire fraud concerning the Pine Ridge Relief Fund, Mrs. Keene," Detective Vance added calmly, not even looking up as she snapped the cuffs shut. "You can call your lawyer from the station."

Beside them, Tessa Vale stood frozen, tears tearing paths through her heavy makeup. "I didn't do anything! I was just a passenger! Brett told me Natalie was taking her own car! I didn't know!"

Brett said nothing. As the steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists, he turned his head, searching the crowd until his eyes landed on me. I was standing near the glass entrance doors, holding baby June securely against my chest in a soft wrap.

His eyes were filled with an ugly, desperate fury. "You destroyed everything, Natalie," he spat, his voice dropping into a raspy whisper as the officers began guiding him toward the heavy glass doors. "You ruined my family. You ruined my life."

"You destroyed yourself, Brett," I said, holding his gaze without a flicker of fear. "The fire just revealed what was already inside you."

An hour later, I was sitting in the quiet, warm office of Amanda Hayes, a high-powered family and criminal law attorney who had taken my case pro bono after learning what happened at the cabin.

The office overlooked the city skyline, quiet and peaceful above the noise of the streets below. Amanda poured two mugs of chamomile tea, setting one down on the glass table in front of me before sitting in the leather armchair opposite mine.

"The public reaction is explosive, Natalie," Amanda said, turning her laptop screen toward me.

Local news outlets, social media channels, and national news syndicates were already running the story. Headline after headline blared across the dark screen:

PINE RIDGE RELIEF FUND FROZEN AMID FRAUD INVESTIGATION

"The District Attorney’s office is treating this with absolute severity," Amanda continued, her tone sharp and precise. "The fact that you were six months pregnant elevates the charges significantly. Brett is facing felony reckless endangerment, desertion during a declared natural emergency, and potential attempted manslaughter charges depending on the medical reports from the night of your rescue."

I took a slow sip of the warm tea, feeling the heat spread through my chest. "What about Eleanor and Tessa?"

"Eleanor is implicated as an accessory," Amanda said. "She was in the vehicle, she actively prevented him from waiting for you, and bank records we sub-poenaed show she was receiving direct monthly transfers from the charity account Brett established."

"And Tessa?"

"Tessa is terrified," Amanda smiled tightly. "Her lawyer has already reached out to the DA offering full cooperation in exchange for immunity on the endangerment charges. She’s willing to testify that Brett and Eleanor explicitly planned to leave you behind because Brett wanted to avoid a costly divorce that would have split his real estate assets and exposed his embezzlement."

I closed my eyes for a long moment, letting those words sink in.

I had spent three years married to Brett Keene. I had believed him when he told me he loved me, when he said his mother was just set in her ways, when he promised we were building a future together. But it had all been a performance—a carefully managed illusion maintained until a natural disaster gave him an excuse to let the flames clean up his mess.

A soft, snuffling sound came from the bassinet beside my chair. I looked down. June was stretching her tiny arms, her dark blue eyes blinking open as she looked up at me.

"He's going to fight for custody, isn't he?" I asked softly, reaching down to trace the soft curve of my daughter's cheek. "To save his public image?"

Amanda’s expression hardened into iron. "He can try, Natalie. But no family court judge in this state will ever let that man within a hundred yards of June after tonight. I will make sure of it."
