Chapter 2 - THE RECKONING AT THE MANSION

By 3:00 p.m. that afternoon, the rain had turned into a steady, grey downpour over the rolling hills of Great Falls, Virginia.
I pulled my SUV into the cobblestone driveway of the six-thousand-square-foot estate Adrian had spent years bragging about in business magazines. Sitting in the back seat, Samuel and Owen looked out the windows, their eyes wide with quiet relief.
"Mommy?" Owen asked, leaning forward against his seatbelt. "Does that mean we don't have to pack our toys into bags like Dad said?"
"You don't have to pack anything, sweetie," I smiled, turning my head to look at both of my boys. "This is your home. Nobody is taking you away."
When we stepped through the double wrought-iron front doors, the house was silent, save for the hum of the central air conditioning. But ten minutes later, the peace was shattered by the roar of an engine outside.
The front door slammed open. Adrian burst into the foyer, his suit jacket unbuttoned, his hair disheveled, and his face contorted in rage. Following right behind him was Paige Ellison, carrying a leather briefcase and looking frantically at her phone.
"Evelyn!" Adrian yelled, his voice echoing off the high marble ceiling. "Where are you?!"
I walked calmly out of the kitchen, holding a warm glass of water. "I'm right here, Adrian. Lower your voice. The boys are upstairs."
"Don't tell me to lower my voice in my house!" he spat, taking three large strides toward me.
"Correction," Paige interjected nervously, looking up from her phone. "Adrian... the corporate registry office just sent an update. The deed to this estate was purchased through Lane Capital Holdings LLC—a subsidiary of the original transit incorporation. It’s... it’s listed under her name."
Adrian stopped dead in his tracks. He stared at Paige as if she had spoken in a foreign language. "What are you talking about?! I paid the mortgage every month from the primary corporate account!"
"Which is owned by me," I reminded him softly, taking a slow sip of my water. "Adrian, for twelve years, you treated me like a silent ghost. You thought because I stayed home with our sons, because I didn't care about red carpets or charity galas, that I had handed you my life. You signed every document I put in front of you during company expansions because you were too arrogant to read the fine print."
"You tricked me!" Adrian roared, stepping into my personal space. "I built the client relationships! I managed the operations! I made Hollis Transit what it is!"
"You managed the public relations, Adrian," I corrected him coldly. "I designed the software. I secured the municipal contracts. I negotiated the state subcontracts. You were the polished face for the investors. I let you play the big, successful CEO because I loved you, and I wanted our family to succeed. But then you brought Paige into our life."
Paige took a step back, her face flushing crimson. "Evelyn, this was strictly professional until—"
"Save it, Paige," I cut her off without even looking at her. "You thought you were marrying a multi-millionaire CEO. You thought you were helping him strip a quiet mother of her children and her dignity. You didn't realize you were siding with a man who didn't even read his own corporate charter."
I pulled a stamped legal notice from the console table beside the doorway and handed it to Adrian.
"This is an Emergency Eviction Notice and Civil Protection Order," I informed him. "Because the property is owned by Lane Capital Holdings, and because you threatened to remove my children from this home through fraudulent means, you have exactly twenty minutes to pack one bag of personal clothes and clear off my land."
May you like
"You can't do this!" Adrian gasped, his hands shaking as he held the paper. "I have nowhere to go! My bank accounts are frozen!"
"I suggest you ask Paige if you can crash on her couch," I said, offering a cold, calm smile. "Your twenty minutes start now."
