Chapter 6 - The Golden Horizon

The evening sun cast a warm, amber glow across the manicured lawns of our estate in the hills, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of violet, gold, and deep indigo. The crisp mountain breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and wet pine—a stark, beautiful contrast to the cold, oppressive rain that had fallen on Saint Jude’s Chapel months ago.
We hosted a small, intimate gathering on the stone terrace, surrounded only by true friends, loyal colleagues who had stood by us through the darkest storms, and federal investigators who had become lifelong allies. There were no fake mourners, no corporate sycophants, and no venomous relatives whispering behind cupped hands.
I stood near the stone balustrade, holding a glass of sparkling cider, looking out over the sprawling city lights below that twinkled like a galaxy of fallen stars.
Footsteps approached softly from behind, and a familiar, warm cashmere jacket draped gently over my shoulders. Luke wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me back against his chest as he rested his chin comfortably on my shoulder.
“Penny for your thoughts, CEO Sterling,” he murmured against my ear, his voice rich with contentment.
“I was just thinking about that single white rose at the funeral,” I replied, turning slightly in his embrace to look into his eyes. “And how strange it is that a single drop of blood could mark the beginning of everything we finally reclaimed.”
Luke’s expression softened, his gaze filling with deep, abiding reverence. “You didn't just reclaim our lives, Jessica. You resurrected them. Every single day I get to wake up beside you is a gift I almost didn't get to unwrap.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined jeweler’s box. He clicked it open. Resting inside was a brand-new, exquisitely crafted platinum ring encrusted with small, brilliant diamonds, designed to replace the one that had been lost during the chaos of the investigation.
“A new wedding band,” Luke whispered, taking my left hand and sliding the ring smoothly onto my finger. “For a brand-new life. No secrets. No shadows. Just us.”
I looked down at the ring catching the amber sunset light, feeling a profound, unshakeable wave of peace wash over my soul. The nightmare in the chapel was nothing more than a distant memory—a closed chapter in a book we had successfully rewritten from the ground up.
I turned around completely, wrapping my arms around Luke’s neck, and pressed my lips softly against his.

“Forever,” I whispered against his mouth.
Outside, the stars continued to climb into the vast, clear night sky, shining down on a world where justice had finally prevailed, and where the golden horizon stretched out endlessly before us, bright, unbroken, and entirely our own.
