Chapter 3 - The Dangerous Game BeginsThe silence that followed Ethan’s confession was so profound I could hear the faint hum of the city lights outside the glass walls.

My brain officially short-circuited.
Try again, my internal operating system flashed in bright red error text. Input does not compute. Did the mafia boss just admit he’s been crushing on his assistant for twelve months while playing cold corporate overlord?
"You..." I stammered, my fingers gripping the hem of my silk blouse. "You planned this? No—wait. You didn't plan for me to yell at a piece of wood in the dark."
"I certainly didn't script the part where you kissed my lips for five solid seconds," Ethan replied, a genuine, albeit wicked, smile breaking across his handsome face. It was the first time I had ever seen him look truly relaxed, and frankly, it was even more dangerous than his usual scowl. "Though I must admit, your commitment to the bit is impressive."
"It wasn't a bit!" I flushed crimson, pulling away from his touch and crossing my arms defensively. "I was having a mental breakdown! Induced entirely by your pathological inability to offer constructive feedback without sounding like a Victorian nobleman judging a peasant!"
Ethan chuckled—a deep, resonant sound that vibrated right through the floorboards. He walked over to his massive oak desk, picked up a sleek black tablet, and tapped the screen twice.
"Duly noted, Miss Summers. From now on, my critiques will come with a certified compliment sandwich to protect your delicate sensibilities."
"I am not delicate!" I snapped, following him into the center of the office. "And I don't want your pity compliments. If my logistics proposal was flawed, you should have told me why instead of tossing it aside with a single word!"
Ethan turned around, his smile fading into something much more intense, much more deliberate. He set the tablet down on the desk and leaned his hips against the polished wood, crossing his arms over his broad chest.
"You want feedback, Alexa?" he asked quietly. "Fine. Let's talk about your proposal. Page fourteen, section three. You suggested rerouting our primary import channel through the Port of Genoa using a shell corporation named Vanguard Logistics."
I blinked, momentarily thrown off balance by his sudden pivot to business. "Yes. Vanguard has clean paperwork and minimal port congestion."
"Vanguard is currently owned by the Moretti family," Ethan stated flatly.
My blood ran cold. "The Moretti... but their public filings—"
"Are forged," Ethan finished for me, his green eyes locking onto mine with lethal precision. "If you had routed our shipments through them, we would have walked straight into a federal sting operation backed by our biggest rivals. Your research was flawless, Alexa. Your data was immaculate. But your intelligence network missed the Moretti connection because I deliberately kept you shielded from that specific tactical file."
I stood frozen, the pieces of the puzzle clicking into place in my head with terrifying clarity.
"You didn't reject my work because it was inadequate," I whispered, the realization dawning slowly. "You rejected it because... because you were protecting me."
"You are my executive assistant," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a low, uncompromising register. "In this world, the people who work closest to me become targets. Keeping you buried in corporate restructuring and clean ledgers was the only way I could ensure you never stepped foot in the crossfire."
The anger that had fueled my meltdown earlier in the evening didn't return; instead, it was replaced by a strange, heavy warmth in my chest. For a year, I had thought he was a cold tyrant who didn't care if I lived or died.
Turns out, he was a cold tyrant who was secretly losing sleep trying to keep me out of the line of fire.
"I'm not fragile, Ethan," I said softly, stepping closer to him. The distance between us evaporated until I could feel the heat radiating off his body. "I grew up in Brooklyn with three older brothers. I know how the world works. I didn't sign up to be wrapped in bubble wrap."
Ethan looked down at me, his gaze fierce, possessive, and entirely untamed.
"I know you aren't fragile," he murmured, his hand coming up to gently cup the side of my neck, his thumb tracing my jawline. "Which is why I'm going to stop pretending."
Before I could process his words, before I could formulate a witty retort or run screaming back to the elevator, Ethan’s other hand slid around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest.
His lips came down on mine.
It wasn't like kissing a cold lacquer portrait. It was real, demanding, and utterly consuming. The kiss tasted like expensive scotch, dark coffee, and pure, unfiltered release after a year of agonizing restraint. My hands instinctively found their way up to his shoulders, gripping the fabric of his shirt as a breathless gasp escaped my lips.
Ethan groaned softly against my mouth, deepening the kiss, his grip tightening until I had nowhere else to go, no desire to be anywhere else.
When we finally broke apart, both of us breathing heavily, Ethan rested his forehead against mine, his eyes closed for a brief moment as if regaining control.
"Well," I whispered, my voice trembling slightly. "That’s... certainly an upgrade from adequate."
May you like
Ethan opened his eyes, a wicked, breathtaking smirk playing on his lips.
"Consider that your performance review, Miss Summers," he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the tip of my nose. "Now... go home, get some sleep, and be at my desk by eight tomorrow morning. We have a syndicate to run."
