Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last StrikeThe morning brought a pale, crisp sunlight that flooded the penthouse, turning the glass walls into sheets of silver.

Maya woke up in the master bed, wrapped in silk sheets that smelled faintly of cedar and rain—Julian's scent. She was alone in the bed, but on the nightstand beside her sat a single white rose, a hot mug of coffee, and a brand-new smartphone in an unopened box.

Beside the phone was a handwritten note in sharp, elegant handwriting:

The phone has my personal number saved. You will never have to worry about a dead battery again. Rest. We will talk when I return. - J.

Maya smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached her eyes for the first time in years. She sat up, sipping the sweet, hot coffee, feeling a sense of peace so profound it felt almost foreign.

Downstairs, in the high-security subterranean offices of Croft Enterprises, the atmosphere was far less peaceful.

Julian sat behind a massive mahogany desk, reviewing financial reports with Derek.

"Viktor Markovic isn't taking the buyout lightly," Derek reported, setting a tablet on the desk. "He knows you bought Apex Capital to protect the girl. He feels publicly humiliated. He’s been reaching out to his contacts in the Bratva, trying to secure weapons for a retaliatory strike on our docks."

Julian didn't look up from his papers. "Viktor is a cockroach, Derek. He only bites when he thinks no one is looking. Has the federal indictment been filed yet?"

"The U.S. Attorney's office received the paper trail we sent them at eight this morning," Derek replied with a grin. "With the evidence of extortion and illegal loan sharking we uncovered when we bought Apex, Viktor will be in a federal penitentiary by noon."

Before Julian could answer, the red light on his desk intercom flashed frantically.

"Boss!" the head of building security called through the speaker. "We have a breach on the residential elevator! Someone used an override code from the old maintenance grid—"

The heavy oak doors of Julian's office burst open with a loud bang.

Viktor Markovic himself stood in the doorway. He was a large, monstrous man with a shaved head, heavily tattooed neck, and eyes wild with the desperation of a trapped animal. He was wearing a heavy trench coat, and in his right hand, he held a military-grade automatic pistol, its barrel aimed directly at Julian's chest.

"CROFT!" Viktor roared, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "You ruined me! You gave my books to the Feds!"

Derek drew his weapon instantly, but Viktor swung his gun toward Derek, firing a single round that blew a hole through the wall, forcing Derek to dive behind a leather sofa for cover.

Julian didn't move. He sat calmly behind his desk, his arms resting on the mahogany surface, his dark eyes fixated on the loan shark with an icy, terrifying composure.

"You should have taken the check, Viktor," Julian said quietly. "It was more money than your pathetic life was worth."

"I don't want your money!" Viktor screamed, sweat pouring down his face as he swung the gun back toward Julian. "I know who you care about now, Croft! I know about the little maid! My men are upstairs in your penthouse right now! By the time I put a bullet through your head, she'll already be dead!"

The air in the room instantly plunged below freezing.

Julian’s eyes widened, a wave of sheer, unadulterated fury surging through his veins like liquid fire.

He didn't wait. He didn't reason.

Julian slammed his hand onto a hidden button under his desk. A heavy steel blast door dropped from the ceiling, slamming into Viktor's arm, crushing the gun out of his hand with a sickening crunch.

Viktor screamed in pain, dropping to his knees.

Julian leaped over his desk, his heavy leather boot slamming directly into Viktor's jaw, sending the massive loan shark crashing onto his back. Julian dropped onto him, his fingers locking around Viktor's throat, squeezing with enough force to crush the man's windpipe.

"Julian! STOP!" Derek yelled, running over and grabbing Julian's shoulders, pulling with all his strength. "He's bluffing! Security is monitoring the penthouse cameras! Maya is fine!"

Julian hesitated, his chest heaving, his eyes bloodshot with rage. He looked up at the security monitor on the wall.

The screen showed the main living room of the penthouse. Maya was standing near the kitchen island, holding her coffee mug, completely undisturbed, two heavily armed Croft guards standing casually by the door.

Julian let out a ragged breath and released Viktor's throat. The loan shark slumped onto the floor, gasping for air, his face turning purple.

"Get him out of my sight," Julian growled, standing up and straightening his dark suit jacket. "Hand him to the Feds. Tell them if he ever breathes air outside a prison cell, I will personally hunt him down."

Julian didn't wait to see Viktor dragged away. He turned on his heel and sprinted toward the elevator, his heart pounding against his ribs, driven by a single, desperate need to hold Maya in his arms.
