Chapter 6 - The Sweetest VictorySix months after the night of the basin, my life looked entirely different.

The consulting firm was expanding into national markets, my software patents were generating record quarterly royalties, and my name was proudly inscribed on the sole deed of my home—untouched, unencumbered, and completely secure.
I was sitting on the back patio during a quiet Sunday morning, wrapped in a plush cashmere cardigan, sipping a steaming mug of artisanal coffee. The autumn leaves were turning amber and gold, swirling gently across the pristine lawn.
My phone buzzed on the patio table.
It wasn't an emergency alert or a bank notification. It was a text message from an unknown number—likely a burner phone.
“Claire, please. Just five minutes of your time. I lost my job, my apartment is being repossessed, and Mom is sick. We have nothing left. Can’t we talk? Please? We’re family.”
I stared at the screen for three seconds.
There was no anger left in my chest. No sorrow. No desire for revenge. Just the hollow echo of a chapter that had been permanently closed, signed, and sealed.
I didn't call him. I didn't yell.
I simply tapped my screen, selected Block Contact, and then clicked Delete Conversation.

The screen went back to my clean, peaceful wallpaper: a photo of me standing on the deck of a sailboat in San Francisco Bay, smiling toward the open ocean, the wind catching my hair, completely unbound and entirely free.
I set the phone down, turned my face toward the warm morning sun, and took a slow, deep breath of air that belonged to no one else but me.
