Chapter 2 - The Exposure of the Parasites

"You... you can't use that," my father stammered, his polished facade finally cracking. "That’s a violation of privacy! We didn't consent to being recorded!"
"This is a private medical facility, Mr. Whitaker," Sgt. Miller said, his tone shifting from professional caution to hard, unyielding steel. He stepped toward my mother, his handcuffs already out. "Under Illinois law, clinical surveillance in a high-care medical ward is fully authorized for patient safety. Dr. Mercer, do you have immediate access to that footage?"
"I do," Julian said. He pulled his tablet from his lab coat pocket, tapped the screen three times, and turned the device toward the police officers.
On the screen, the playback was crystal clear. The wide-angle lens captured the entire room. It showed my mother entering like a predator, dropping the folder on my chest. It played back her sharp, demanding voice: “You have two hundred and fifty thousand dollars sitting in an account. Connor needs it.” It showed my father systematically moving to block the window, his eyes cold and complicit. And then, in agonizing high-definition, it showed Evelyn ripping the blood pressure monitor from the wall and bringing it down onto my face with sickening force.
"Oh my God," Connor whispered, taking a step toward the door. "I... I didn't touch her. I didn't do anything!"
"You stood there and watched your sister get bludgeoned, kid," the second police officer, a veteran named Officer Davis, said as he grabbed Connor’s arm and spun him around, clicking the heavy metal cuffs around his wrists. "That makes you an accomplice to domestic battery and coercion. Shut your mouth."
"Richard! Do something!" Evelyn screamed as Sgt. Miller forced her hands behind her back. The silver-blonde hair she spent hundreds of dollars maintaining every month was now wild and disheveled, clinging to her sweat-slicked face. "We have rights! We are the Whitakers! Maya, tell them! Tell them it was an accident! If you do this, I will disown you! You will never be a part of this family again!"
I looked at her through the eye that wasn't swollen shut. The pain in my head was a raging fire, but inside my chest, for the first time in my life, there was a cold, beautiful stillness.
"I don't have a family, Evelyn," I said, my voice barely a whisper, but it carried to every corner of the room. "I have a mortgage I’ve been paying. I have a collection of parasites. Take them away."
"Maya! Please!" my father pleaded as Officer Davis pushed him against the wall to cuff him. "Think about our reputation! Think about my firm! If this gets out, we’ll lose everything!"
"You should have thought about that before you stood watch at my execution, Dad," I said.
As the officers dragged them out of the room, their screams of denial and empty threats echoed down the hallway, drawing the eyes of dozens of horrified hospital staff and visitors. The great, respectable Whitaker family of Oak Brook was being carted away in steel chains, their dirty laundry laid bare for the entire world to see.
Julian let out a long breath, his shoulders dropping as he carefully began to clean the wound on my head. "They're gone, Maya. They're finally gone."
"Is the footage safe, Julian?" I asked, my vision beginning to blur as the adrenaline started to fade, leaving only the crushing weight of my physical exhaustion.
"It’s already been backed up on three different secure servers," Julian assured me, his voice soft and thick with emotion. "I’ve sent a copy to the State’s Attorney's office and to my personal legal counsel. They won't be able to buy their way out of this one. I promise you."
May you like
"Good," I murmured, my eyelids growing heavy. "Because I’m... I’m so tired."
"Sleep, Maya," Julian whispered, his hand gently resting on my uninjured cheek. "I’ve got you. You’re safe now."
