Chapter 4: The Fall of the Matriarch

The drive back to Westport felt like a descent into hell. Two police cruisers followed my car, their lights flashing silently in the dark.
When we pulled up to the estate, the front door was wide open. The pristine, manicured lawn was illuminated by the harsh headlights of my car. I leaped out, sprinting up the steps, the two officers hot on my heels.
Inside, the house was in chaos. The living room, usually a testament to minimalist perfection, was disheveled. A crystal vase lay shattered on the floor.
I bolted up the stairs toward the master bedroom. As I reached the hallway, I heard the sound of wood splintering.
I threw open the door to our bedroom.
Vivian Carlisle was there. She had dropped her elegant demeanor completely. Her hair was coming loose from its perfect chignon, and she was wielding a heavy brass fire poker, furiously smashing the back wall of our walk-in closet. The built-in shoe racks had been torn away, revealing the metal gray box of the digital surveillance server Marjorie had told me about.
"Vivian Carlisle! Drop the weapon and step away!" one of the officers shouted, drawing his taser.
Vivian spun around, the fire poker raised. When she saw me, her face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom.
"Ethan! You ungrateful, miserable boy!" she screamed, her voice cracking. "Everything I did, I did for this family! For your legacy! That girl is a parasite! She was going to drag our name into the mud with her pathetic, lower-class sensibilities! I was refining her! I was making her worthy of carrying a Carlisle!"
"You're sick, Mother," I said, my voice eerily calm as I stepped past the officers. "You're a monster."
"I am your mother!" she shrieked, taking a step toward me. "You are nothing without my money! Without my influence! You think you can survive in the real world with that... that peasant?"
"Drop the poker, ma'am! Now!" the officer warned.
Vivian looked at the server box, then at me. With a desperate yell, she swung the poker toward the metal box, intending to smash the hard drives inside.
Before she could connect, the officer fired his taser. The prongs struck her back, and she stiffened, dropping the poker as a violent tremor went through her body. She collapsed onto the plush carpet, groaning as the officers quickly descended on her, pinning her arms behind her back and clicking the handcuffs into place.
As they dragged her up, she looked at me, her eyes wild. "You've ruined us, Ethan. The press... the scandal... you've destroyed the family."
May you like
"No," I said, reaching into the closet and carefully disconnecting the server box, ensuring the blinking green lights stayed intact. "I didn't destroy the family. I just ended yours. My family is back at the hospital."
The officers marched her out of the house. I stood alone in the wrecked bedroom, holding the heavy metal box that contained the absolute proof of her malice. I felt a profound sense of emptiness, but beneath it, for the first time in my life, a spark of absolute freedom.
