Chapter 3 - The Interrogation and the Web of LiesThe investigation moved with terrifying speed because the evidence left zero room for ambiguity. By the time Daniel was being escorted down to the precinct for questioning, Victoria Sterling had already arrived at my hospital room with a briefcase full of preliminary legal motions, financial freezes, and restraining orders.

“The audio file is legally pristine, Emily,” Victoria whispered, closing her laptop after verifying the cloud backups. “The timestamp matches your medical admission records down to the minute. The voice identification is indisputable. Margaret Ross is going to be arrested before the end of the day, and any attempt by Daniel to obstruct justice will implicate him directly.”
“Good,” I said, staring out the window at the autumn rain beginning to slick the pavement. “I want every asset frozen. Every bank account, every investment portfolio, and especially the joint accounts Margaret was draining for her gambling debts.”
While I coordinated with my legal team from the bed, the police were methodically dismantling my husband’s fragile reality down at the stationhouse.
According to Detective Vance’s subsequent briefing, Daniel had initially tried to stick to the pre-arranged family script. He told the detectives that I was emotionally unstable, prone to hysterical outbursts, and that my claims about Margaret pushing me were the hallucinations of a grieving, traumatized woman.
The detectives listened patiently. Then, halfway through the interview, Detective Vance slid a tablet across the metal interrogation table and played the audio file from the upstairs hallway camera.
Halfway through Margaret’s voice saying, “You should have learned your place,” followed by my scream, Daniel’s lawyer reportedly slammed his hand down on the table to stop the playback, realizing they had walked straight into an inescapable trap.
Faced with a federal-grade compliance investigator as a victim who had secured her own digital chain of custody, the defense crumbled before it even began.
By 4:00 PM that afternoon, an arrest warrant was executed at the Ross family estate. Local news stations cameras captured footage of Margaret Ross—the untouchable, high-society matriarch who looked down on everyone—being led out of her home in handcuffs, wrapped in a beige cashmere shawl, her face twisted in furious disbelief as she spat insults at the camera crew.
Daniel was released from police custody late that evening, but he wasn't allowed back into our home. Under the emergency protective orders Victoria had filed, Daniel was barred from approaching me, stepping foot in the house, or accessing any corporate or personal funds tied to my pre-marital estate or joint accounts.

When Daniel tried to call my burner phone around midnight, pleading for a conversation, I didn't answer. I listened to his desperate, broken voicemail—blaming his mother, blaming the stress, begging me to remember our vows—before deleting the file without a second thought.
The system they thought they could manipulate had turned against them. But the war wasn't over yet. Margaret and Daniel still had access to old family connections, and people cornered by their own crimes rarely go down without a brutal, desperate fight.
