Chapter 3 - The Trap ClosesBefore Adrian could swing the crowbar again to smash through the partition, the deep, resonant rumble of heavy diesel engines vibrated through the limestone foundation beneath our feet.

Adrian stopped dead, his flashlight beam flickering against the dust.

“What is that?” he muttered, backing away from the wall toward the utility stairs.

Through the ceiling monitors, I watched the upper levels of the estate explode into sudden, chaotic motion. Infrared security cameras mounted on the front gates showed three unmarked black SUVs barreling past the security checkpoint, their emergency strobes flashing in the midnight rain.

Uniformed federal agents poured out of the vehicles, armed with automatic rifles and tactical shields, moving with terrifying, disciplined precision toward the main entrance of the manor.

At the same moment, the estate’s main landline telephone began ringing incessantly through the hidden speaker system in my chamber.

Ring. Ring. Ring.

Adrian didn't answer it. He was sprinting up the utility stairs now, his heavy boots clattering against the stone steps as panic entirely overtook him.

I waited until I heard the heavy iron door at the top of the stairs slam shut, followed by the muffled sound of him running toward the library. Then, I calmly stepped through the shattered wooden partition, walked over to the desk, and picked up the secure master handset wired directly to the estate’s switchboard.

I pressed the flashing line.

“Salgado residence,” a panicked, breathless voice panted into the receiver.

It was Beatrice.

“Good evening, Beatrice,” I said, my voice smooth, calm, and utterly chilling.

A sharp gasp echoed on the other end of the line. “Mariana? Where are you? How are you—?”

“Looking at you,” I interrupted, clicking over to camera four, which showed Beatrice standing in the grand foyer, clutching a diamond necklace to her chest while federal agents banged heavily on the front mahogany doors. “You look stressed, Beatrice. For a woman who owns an empire, you seem awfully fragile when the bill finally comes due.”

“You little country bitch!” Beatrice shrieked, losing every shred of her aristocratic composure. “You’ve ruined everything! Do you have any idea who we are? We made you! We pulled you out of that dusty farm and gave you a name!”

“You didn't give me a name,” I replied quietly. “You rented a face for your PR campaigns while you plotted to murder me for my grandfather’s land. But don't worry—you won't have to worry about my lack of social pedigree much longer.”

“Open the front door!” a voice boomed through the speakers from the foyer.

It was Agent Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, backed by local state troopers.

“Federal Bureau of Investigation! Execute search warrant number 884-J! Open the door or we will breach!”

On the monitor, Beatrice stood paralyzed in the center of the grand foyer as the heavy oak doors splintered under a battering ram, flying inward with a deafening crash. Federal agents swarmed the marble hallway, their tactical lights cutting through the crystal chandeliers as they forced Beatrice to her knees and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

I watched it all unfold from the cool, silent safety of my grandfather’s underground vault, sipping a cup of warm spring water.

The empire had fallen. And it hadn't even taken a single drop of blood.
