Chapter 2 - The Conspiracy Revealed

By midnight, I was lying in a private room on the maternity ward at St. Jude’s Hospital.
The fetal monitor strapped around my stomach emitted a steady, reassuring thump-thump, thump-thump—our baby girl’s heartbeat was strong and undisturbed by the horror of the afternoon. The doctors had confirmed that while my blood pressure had spiked dangerously during the assault, the baby was entirely healthy and safe.
Arthur sat in the armchair beside the bed, his laptop open, lit only by the soft blue glow of the screen. He had showered, changed into civilian clothes, and spent the last four hours on the phone with military investigators, local homicide detectives, and our family lawyer, Marcus Thorne.
Marcus, a formidable attorney with thirty years of trial experience, stood near the window, reviewing a stack of digital files that had just been subpoenaed from Victoria’s personal records.
"It’s far deeper than a mother-in-law throwing a tantrum, Arthur," Marcus said softly, sliding his glasses down his nose. "Victoria didn't act on impulse today. This was a calculated, four-month operation."
I sat up slightly in the bed, clutching a pillow. "What do you mean, Marcus?"
Marcus pulled up a document on his tablet and turned it toward us. "We just gained emergency access to your electronic medical records from Oakridge Women’s Health. Clara, who was your primary OB-GYN over the last six months?"
"Dr. Julian Mercer," I replied immediately. "Victoria recommended him. She said he was the best specialist in the state, that he delivered Arthur when he was born."
"Dr. Mercer isn't just a specialist," Marcus said darkly. "He’s deeply in debt due to illegal gambling ventures in Atlantic City. And three months ago, a private holding company registered under Victoria Vance’s name quietly paid off a four-hundred-thousand-dollar lien on Dr. Mercer’s medical practice."
Arthur’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Quid pro quo."
"Precisely," Marcus continued. "In exchange for financial salvation, Dr. Mercer spent the last sixteen weeks systematically falsifying Clara’s medical records. Every time you went in for a routine checkup, Clara, Mercer was logging fake psychiatric notes into the portal. He documented that you were experiencing severe auditory hallucinations, expressing thoughts of self-harm, and displaying 'extreme detachment from reality.'"
Tears burned my eyes. "I never said any of those things! Every appointment was totally normal! He just measured my belly and checked the ultrasound!"
"We know, sweetheart," Arthur said, reaching over to squeeze my hand. "He was building an official paper trail so that when Victoria applied for emergency legal custody upon the baby’s birth, the court would look at certified medical records from a respected doctor and deem you unfit."
"And the casualty report?" I asked, my voice shaking. "How did she get an official military document?"
"She didn't," Arthur answered, his tone dropping into a deadly calm. "I spoke with my Battalion Commander two hours ago. Victoria called the base three weeks ago, claiming there was a family emergency and asking for my exact deployment status. When they refused to give her classified details, she hired a disgraced former army clerk who works at a local print shop to forge a casualty notification sheet."
"She wanted to break you mentally," Marcus explained. "If you believed Arthur was dead, you would be isolated, grieving, and far more likely to sign away your rights under physical threat. She intended to take the baby, lock you in a private psychiatric facility using Dr. Mercer’s false diagnoses, and raise Arthur's child as her own legacy."
The sheer evil of the plan hung in the hospital room like heavy smog.
Victoria hadn't just disliked me because I came from a modest working-class background; she viewed me as a surrogate container for her grandchild. She wanted the Vance bloodline, but she wanted to erase me from it completely.
"Where is Mercer now?" Arthur asked Marcus.
"Detective Harris and two officers from the Financial Crimes Unit are at his clinic right now with a search warrant," Marcus replied. "They’re seizing his servers. Mercer is going to face federal conspiracy charges, medical license revocation, and imprisonment."
"And Victoria?" I asked softly.
Marcus gave a cold, grim smile. "Victoria’s legal team tried to request emergency bail an hour ago. But because Arthur provided the forged military document, federal authorities have stepped in. Forging Department of Defense casualty reports carries federal treason and fraud implications. Her bail was flatly denied. She is currently sitting in a cell at the county jail."
Arthur stood up from his chair, walking over to the window that looked out over the city lights.

"She thought because I was overseas, she could wage a war in my home," Arthur whispered, staring at his reflection in the dark glass. "She forgot who taught me how to fight."
He turned back to me, his dark eyes filled with absolute resolve. "Tomorrow, we drop the full hammer on every single person who touched this."
