Chapter 3 - The Coward’s CollapseChaos erupted instantly.

Margaret sprang up from the sofa with the agility of a woman half her age, screaming at the top of her lungs. "You can't do this! You can't throw me out on the street! Ethan! Do something! Are you just going to stand there and let this ungrateful bitch throw your mother out like trash?!"

Ethan stood frozen in the center of the living room, holding the deed like it was burning his fingers. He looked like his entire universe had just been pulverized by a wrecking ball. For eight months, he had played the role of the comfortable peacemaker—nodding along with his mother’s daily insults, enjoying the illusion that he was the patriarch providing for his delicate, dependent wife, while secretly benefiting from the luxury lifestyle my income provided.

"Lauren... please," Ethan stammered, taking a hesitant step toward me, his hands raised in a pleading gesture. "Let’s... let’s not do this publicly. Let’s calm down. Mom was out of line, I admit it! She shouldn't have thrown water at you. We’ll get her a hotel room for a few days—"

"A hotel room?" I laughed—a sharp, cold sound that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings. "Ethan, your mother committed a felony assault inside my home. She didn't just cross a line; she obliterated it. And you stood by for eight months watching her degrade me, excuse her abuse, and treat me like a parasite while eating off my plate and sleeping under my roof."

"I was trying to keep the peace!" Ethan cried out, his voice cracking with desperation. "You know how she gets! If I stood up to her, she would throw a fit—"

"And that’s why you failed as a husband," I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying the unyielding weight of total finality. "Peace without boundaries isn't peace, Ethan. It’s cowardice. You traded my safety for your own convenience."

Officer Miller stepped forward, placing a hand on his belt. "All right, folks. Let’s keep it moving. Margaret Hayes, you have been formally served with an emergency eviction notice and a temporary protective order filed on behalf of the homeowner, Lauren Hayes. You have twenty minutes to pack your personal belongings under our supervision, and then you must vacate the premises. Any attempt to return will result in immediate arrest for trespassing."

Margaret let out a piercing, theatrical shriek of rage and victimization. "Arrest me?! For what?! For protecting my son from a gold-digging shrew?! You’re all corrupt! This is a conspiracy!"

She turned to Ethan, grabbing his shirt collar and shaking him furiously. "Tell them, Ethan! Tell them you own this house! Tell them she’s lying!"

Ethan couldn't look her in the eye. He stared down at his sneakers, his shoulders slumping in total defeat. "Mom... stop. Just... pack your bags."

Margaret stared at her son as if he had plunged a dagger straight into her heart. The realization that her golden-boy son was powerless against the reality of my financial and legal independence shattered whatever fragile ego she had left.

While the locksmith systematically unbolted the front door lock and replaced it with a heavy-duty deadbolt, and Officer Miller stood guard in the hallway, Margaret was forced to march upstairs and throw her designer clothes into two large suitcases like a common criminal being evicted from a motel.

Marcus Vance stood beside me near the kitchen counter, quietly sliding a second set of documents across the marble surface.

"Here is the draft of the expedited divorce petition, Lauren," Marcus murmured softly, ensuring only I could hear. "Grounds: physical assault, extreme cruelty, and financial deception. Do you want me to have a courier serve him at his office this afternoon?"

May you like

I looked down at the cream-colored folder, tracing my thumb over the title block.

"Yes, Marcus," I replied calmly. "Serve him at noon. Let’s make sure his day is just as productive as mine."
