Chapter 3 - The Cold Unmasking

By nine o'clock on Sunday morning, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, merciless Texas sunlight that exposed every flaw in the city.
A sleek black Mercedes van pulled up to the security gates of the gated enclave in Frisco. Inside sat Arthur, two uniformed Dallas County Sheriff's deputies, a certified court process server, and myself. I was dressed in an immaculate charcoal-grey pantsuit, my dark hair pulled back into a severe, elegant bun, my face calm and unreadable.
The gates opened, and the van wound its way through the pristine neighborhood until it stopped in front of a sprawling, newly constructed two-story Mediterranean home. A brand-new crimson Porsche Macan sat in the driveway—purchased two months ago with a wire transfer from Mauricio’s business line of credit.
"The temporary emergency injunction was signed by Judge Miller at seven a.m.," Arthur said, handing me a stamped court document. "We have full legal authority to secure the premises, freeze the titling, and serve Chloe Sterling with an immediate notice of civil asset forfeiture."
I stepped out of the van. The morning air was crisp.
I walked up the stone walkway to the grand mahogany front door and pressed the doorbell.
Ten seconds passed. Then twenty.
The door swung open.
Chloe Sterling stood in the entryway, wearing a silk ice-blue robe, holding a steaming mug of artisanal coffee. Her long blonde hair was tumbled over her shoulders, her face relaxed and glowing—until her eyes registered the two armed sheriff's deputies standing directly behind me.
"Can I... help you?" Chloe asked, her voice faltering as her eyes darted from the uniforms to my tailored suit. "If this is about the construction noise from Friday, I already spoke to the HOA—"
"Chloe Sterling?" Arthur stepped forward, holding a thick legal folder.
"Yes?"
"You are being formally served with a Emergency Injunction, Notice of Fraudulent Conveyance, and a Demand for Immediate Asset Surrender issued by the 192nd District Court of Dallas County," Arthur stated clearly.
Chloe’s coffee mug trembled in her hand. "What?! What are you talking about? Who are you people?!"
I took a step forward into the foyer. My eyes swept over the interior—the soaring two-story ceilings, the white marble floors, the custom Italian chandelier, and the framed photograph on the entryway table showing Mauricio and Chloe kissing on a beach in Cabo San Lucas during a weekend he had claimed to be attending a medical logistics conference in Chicago.
"I’m Valeria Vance," I said softly, looking her dead in the eye. "Mauricio’s wife. And the actual owner of the money that bought this house."
Chloe’s face drained of every ounce of color. The confidence of a pampered mistress vanished instantly, replaced by a wide-eyed, wild panic.
"Valeria..." she stammered, backing up two steps into the hallway. "Look... whatever Mauricio told you... this is a business arrangement! I run the marketing firm! This house is registered to an LLC!"
"An LLC funded entirely by four hundred and eighty thousand dollars stolen through felony bank fraud from my corporate real estate holdings," I corrected smoothly.
I gestured to the sheriff's deputies.
"Deputy," I said. "Please inform Miss Sterling of her timeline."
The lead deputy stepped forward, his hand resting casually on his utility belt. "Ma'am, this property is currently under a court-ordered asset freeze. You have sixty minutes to collect your personal clothing and basic toilet items. Any high-value items, jewelry, vehicle keys, or financial documents purchased within the last eight months are seized pending judicial review. A towing truck is currently en route for the Porsche in the driveway."
"The Porsche?!" Chloe shrieked, dropping her coffee mug. It shattered against the white marble floor, dark brown liquid splashing over her manicured toes. "He bought that for my birthday! That's my car!"
"It was bought with stolen corporate funds, Miss Sterling," Arthur informed her without a shred of sympathy. "If you attempt to remove any property from this house, you will be arrested on the spot for obstruction of justice."
"Where is Mauricio?!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking hysterically as tears began to smudge her mascara. "Call him! Tell him to get down here right now!"
I smiled—a slow, terrifyingly cold smile.
"Mauricio is currently sitting in a holding cell at the Central Processing Unit in downtown Dallas," I said softly. "He spent the night on a concrete bench next to his mother. Neither of them could raise the fifty thousand dollars cash bail for felony theft of services. And by noon today, the district attorney will be serving him with three additional felony counts of bank fraud, forgery, and grand larceny."
Chloe collapsed against the entryway wall, clutching her silk robe against her chest, sobbing uncontrollably. "He told me... he told me you were just a secretary! He said he paid for everything! He said you were a plain, worthless woman who depended on him for rent!"
"Mauricio lies," I said simply. "He lies to his mother, he lies to his wife, and he lied to you. Now, you have fifty-five minutes to pack a trash bag of clothes before the locks on this house are changed."
I turned on my heel and walked back down the stone path to the Mercedes van, leaving her weeping hysterically amidst the shattered porcelain and spilled coffee in the foyer.
"Where to now, Valeria?" Arthur asked as I slid into the leather seat.
May you like
I looked at my watch. It was ten-fifteen in the morning.
"To my in-laws' house," I said flatly. "It’s time to pay Rogelio a visit."
