Chapter 2 - The Red Carpet and the Blue Lights

"Chicago Police! Open up!"
The booming voice from the other side of the heavy oak door shattered the tension in the room.
Ryan froze, his hand still gripping my wrist. Denise’s triumphant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a look of utter confusion.
"Why are the police here?" Denise whispered, her voice suddenly losing its sharp edge. "Ryan, did you call them? Did she do something to you?"
"I didn't call anyone," Ryan hissed, his grip tightening on my arm before I violently wrenched myself free.
I stumbled toward the door, ignoring the agonizing, throbbing pain in my right leg. Every step felt like dragging my skin across broken glass, but adrenaline carried me forward. I flipped the deadbolt and threw the door open.
Two uniformed police officers stood in the hallway, their hands resting cautiously near their utility belts. Behind them stood the building's overnight doorman, Marcus, his face pale with worry.
"Ma'am? We received an emergency SOS broadcast from this location," the lead officer, a burly man with a tag that read Officer Davis, said. His eyes swept over me, immediately locking onto my swollen, reddened cheek and the wet, stained pajamas clinging to my blistered leg. "Are you alright?"
"No," I gasped, the dam of emotions finally breaking. Tears of pain and relief flooded my eyes. "My husband... he slapped me. And his mother threw boiling soup on my leg. Please, help me."
"Hey! That is a complete lie!" Ryan shouted, rushing to the door, his face twisted into a mask of righteous indignation. "Officers, thank God you're here. My wife is having a manic episode. She’s unstable. She threw the soup herself and then started clawing at her own face to frame me!"
"That's right!" Denise chimed in, stepping up behind her son, her voice dripping with fake maternal concern. "She’s been hysterical all morning. My son has done nothing but try to calm her down. She’s always been jealous of our close relationship, and she’s trying to ruin his reputation!"
Officer Davis didn't look convinced. He stepped into the foyer, his partner, Officer Miller, following close behind and immediately placing himself between Ryan and me.
"Ma'am, we have medical personnel on the way," Officer Miller said gently, guiding me to a chair in the entryway. "Just sit down and let us take a look at that leg."
"Don't sit on that chair!" Denise snapped, pointing a manicured finger at me. "That's Italian leather! Ryan bought that with his hard-earned money! You have no right to ruin it with your dirty—"
"Ma'am, step back and shut your mouth," Officer Davis warned, his tone leaving no room for argument. He turned his attention to Ryan. "Sir, I need you to step over here and keep your hands where I can see them."
"Officer, you don't understand," Ryan said, trying to smooth his hair down and adopt a professional, charming tone. "I am a sales manager at Halston Industrial Group. I am a respected member of this community. I own this condo. This is my property. My wife has a history of mental instability, and I want her removed from my home immediately."
I looked up from the chair, a cold, sharp smile cutting through my tears. "Your home, Ryan?"
"Yes, my home!" Ryan snapped, glaring at me. "Officers, I have the right to ask her to leave. I paid for this place. I have the paperwork to prove it."
"Actually, sir, we're going to need to verify occupancy and ownership anyway, given the domestic dispute," Officer Davis said. He turned to Marcus, the doorman, who was still standing in the hallway. "Marcus, does this man own this unit?"
Marcus looked at Ryan, then at me, his expression a mix of pity and disgust. "Officer... Mr. Mercer moved in here two years ago when he started dating Miss Claire. But this building's registry has only one owner for Unit 1402."
"And who is that?" Officer Davis asked.
"Claire Sterling," Marcus said clearly. "Her parents purchased the unit in full five years ago. Mr. Mercer is not on the deed. He’s not even on the building’s approved co-owner list. He’s just a resident."
Denise’s face went entirely blank. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her looking old and withered. "What? Marcus, you must be mistaken. My son bought this condo. He showed me the bank statements! He showed me the pre-approval letters!"
"He lied to you, Denise," I said, my voice steady despite the searing pain in my leg. "He doesn't own a single brick of this building."
"Claire, shut your mouth!" Ryan yelled, taking a step toward me.
Officer Miller instantly grabbed Ryan’s arm, twisting it behind his back and slamming him against the wall. "Sir, I told you to stay put! You are under arrest for domestic battery!"
"No! Get your hands off him!" Denise shrieked, lunging toward Officer Miller. "You can't arrest my son! He's a successful man! He owns this place! Claire, tell them! Tell them you're lying!"
"Officer Davis," I said, pointing to the desk in the corner of the living room. "In the bottom drawer, there is a fireproof lockbox. The deed to this condo is inside, along with the purchase agreement and my pre-nuptial agreement. The code is 0824."
Officer Davis walked over to the desk, opened the drawer, and pulled out the small black lockbox. He punched in the code, and the lid clicked open. He pulled out a thick stack of legal documents and began flipping through them.
Denise watched him, her breath hitching in her throat. She looked at Ryan, who was now handcuffed against the wall, his face pressed against the paint, sweating profusely.
"Let's see," Officer Davis muttered, reading the documents. "Deed of Trust for Unit 1402... Purchaser: Claire Sterling. Sole owner. Paid in full. No mortgage." He flipped to the next document. "And here is the pre-nuptial agreement, signed three weeks ago by Claire Sterling and Ryan Mercer. Section 4 clearly states that Ryan Mercer waives all rights to Unit 1402, and any appreciation of the property, in the event of a divorce."
The silence that followed was absolute.
Denise turned to her son, her eyes wide with a mixture of horror and betrayal. "Ryan... what is he talking about? You told me you paid two million dollars for this place. You told me you were the one who put her name on the deed out of the goodness of your heart!"
Ryan didn't answer. He just stared at the floor, his jaw clenched, tears of anger and humiliation spilling over his eyelashes.

But the police officer wasn't finished.
"Wait a minute," Officer Davis said, pulling out another document from the bottom of the box. His brows furrowed. "What is this?"
