Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Vance & Associates

By Wednesday morning, the corporate empire of Vance & Associates was in full, irreversible freefall.

News of Ethan Fleming’s arrest on felony assault and financial fraud charges had hit the front page of the Miami Herald and flashed across every financial news network in the state. Investors panicked. Corporate clients rushed to terminate their contracts, terrified of being tainted by association with a firm embroiled in criminal embezzlement and violent domestic abuse.

I sat behind the massive mahogany desk in my newly reclaimed executive office on the top floor of the Calloway Tower. The view of Biscayne Bay was breathtaking, the morning sun sparkling off the turquoise water like shattered diamonds.

A soft knock interrupted my thoughts.

The door swung open, and Rachel Carter stepped inside, holding a tray with two steaming cups of coffee. She wore her white doctor’s coat over a sharp navy blue dress, her expression a mix of lingering concern and fierce pride.

"How is the shoulder?" Rachel asked, setting a cup on my desk before taking the seat opposite me.

"Healing," I replied, rolling my left shoulder carefully. The burns were covered by specialized medical dressings, and the throbbing ache had dulled to a manageable hum. "The plastic surgeon said the scarring will be minimal, thanks to your quick intervention at the ER."

Rachel smiled softly. "I told you during our second year of law school before I switched to pre-med: never underestimate a woman who knows how to read a balance sheet and a medical chart."

"You saved my life, Rachel," I said sincerely, raising my coffee cup in a silent toast. "If you hadn't looked at that emergency directive hidden in my digital medical archive..."

"I knew something was wrong the moment Ethan walked in playing the grieving, clumsy husband," Rachel interrupted. "He always had that arrogant, rehearsed cadence. The kind of man who believes everyone around him is an idiot."

My phone chimed on the desk. It was an encrypted notification from Kenneth Boyd.

“Emergency board meeting at Vance & Associates underway. Senior partners are trying to vote Ethan out. They need your signature as primary trust holder to liquidate his remaining partnership shares.”

I glanced at my watch. "Shall we go watch the execution?"

"I wouldn't miss it for the world," Rachel grinned.
