Chapter 5 - The Turning PointThe pressure of Ethan’s fingers began to tighten around my neck, cutting off my air supply. My vision swam, red and gold spots exploding behind my eyelids. I couldn't move my arms to fight him off; I couldn't kick or scratch. I was entirely at his mercy.

One... two... three...
Suddenly, the heavy iron basement door blew off its hinges with an earth-shattering BANG.
"FBI! Federal Agents! Don't move!"
Floodlights blinded the damp room as half a dozen armed agents poured down the stairs, weapons drawn and tactical gear gleaming in the harsh light.
Ethan froze, his hands snapping away from my throat as if he’d been burned. He turned toward the stairs, a flash of pure panic crossing his features before he instinctively slid back into his mask of arrogant calm.
"There must be some mistake—" Ethan began, raising his hands slowly.
"Shut your mouth, Mr. Morgan!" Detective Mason barked, stepping through the tactical team with a heavy, thick manila binder tucked under his arm. He strode straight over to Ethan and slammed heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists, shoving him hard against the stone pillar.
"You're under arrest for the premeditated murder of Emily Morgan, the attempted murder of Claire Morgan, and wire fraud," Mason shouted, reading him his rights with undisguised satisfaction.
As officers swarmed Ethan and dragged him thrashing toward the stairs, Mason rushed to my bedside, popping the locks on my bed straps and calling frantically for the medical team waiting outside.
"Are you okay?" Mason asked, leaning over me as paramedics rushed in with oxygen and a stretcher.
I took a deep, shuddering breath of clean air, tears spilling hot and fast down my cheeks. "You... you found the safe?"
Mason pulled a small, blood-stained silver locket and a thick, leather-bound journal from his jacket pocket and laid them gently on my chest.
"We found the safe, all right," Mason said, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. "And inside, alongside Emily’s wedding ring and her personal diary detailing every single threat Ethan ever made against her, was a thumb drive containing video footage from the security camera Ethan forgot was mounted on the garage overhang."
I stared down at the journal, the weight of survival finally settling deep into my bones.
"The camera?" I whispered.
"Captured the whole thing," Mason nodded. "Every push. Every lie. Ethan’s empire is gone, Claire. His bank accounts are frozen, his mother is facing life without parole, and your husband is going to spend the rest of his natural life behind bars."

Paramedics lifted me onto the rolling stretcher, gently wheeling me out of the dark, suffocating basement and up toward the open doors of the estate.
As we rolled past the front foyer, the cool ocean breeze washed over my face. For the first time in months, the heavy cast around my body didn't feel like a prison. It felt like armor.
