Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Cards

The silence that followed Daniel's statement was deafening.

Gloria’s jaw dropped so low her pearls practically rattled against her chest. Tessa’s glossy red nails dug so hard into her designer sleeves that I thought she might tear the fabric. Marcus looked as if he were about to throw up right on my imported Italian rug.

“D-Daniel, please,” Gloria stammered, her voice cracking as she took a step back, her hands fluttering to her throat. “What are you saying? Federal prosecutors? Charity fraud? This is a misunderstanding! We love you! We’ve only ever tried to protect you from... from her!” She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me.

“Protect me?” Daniel’s voice was dangerously calm. He stepped forward, putting himself between them and me, acting as a physical shield. “Protect me by hitting my wife? Protect me by spitting at her feet? Protect me by trying to extort her for a house that she bought with her own money?”

“She lied to you!” Tessa shrieked, her composure completely shattering. “She’s a gold digger, Daniel! She’s been living off your military pension and your status! She doesn't even have a real job!”

One of the men in the dark suits stepped forward. He adjusted his glasses, opened his leather briefcase, and pulled out a thick stack of laminated documents.

“Actually, Mrs. Vance,” the man said, his voice flat and professional. “My name is Special Agent Miller from the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS, working in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. And I can assure you, Mrs. Avery Vance has a very real, very lucrative career. In fact, she is one of the top forensic financial consultants in the country. It is her work that helped us secure the indictments we are holding right now.”

Marcus’s eyes darted from the agent to me, his face turning from pale to a ghostly, translucent white. “Indictments? For what? We haven’t done anything wrong! Avery is framing us!”

“Is she?” Daniel asked. He looked at the agent with the camera. “Keep recording. Every word.”

I stepped out from behind Daniel’s shoulder, my voice steady, the pain in my cheek fading under the rush of adrenaline.

“Let’s talk about your ‘innocence,’ Marcus,” I said, my voice echoing in the quiet hallway. “Six weeks ago, you used Daniel’s military ID, which you stole from his study during our Thanksgiving dinner, to apply for a $250,000 Small Business Administration loan under the Military Veteran Entrepreneur program. You forged his signature and used our home address as collateral.”

Marcus opened his mouth to protest, but I didn’t let him.

“And Tessa,” I continued, turning my gaze to my sister-in-law, who was now trembling so hard she had to lean against the wall for support. “You’ve been serving as the voluntary treasurer for the 'Vance Veteran Foundation' for the past year. Did you really think I wouldn’t notice the $85,000 in ‘vendor payments’ made to a shell company called 'T&M Creative Designs'? A company registered under your maiden name, operating out of a P.O. Box in Delaware? You forged my signature on three separate checks to authorize those transfers.”

Tessa choked on her breath, her eyes wide with terror. “How... how did you—”

“I told you, Tessa,” I said softly. “I am a forensic financial investigator. I find hidden money for a living. You left a paper trail so wide a blind man could follow it. You bought a luxury SUV and paid off your credit card debts with money meant for disabled veterans.”

“And you, Mother,” I said, turning to Gloria.

The woman who had raised me, the woman who had always told me I was nothing, stared at me with pure hatred, but beneath the hatred was a cold, creeping fear.

“You’ve been draining Daniel’s deployment account,” I said. “The joint account we set up for emergencies while he was overseas. You had the power of attorney documents from ten years ago—before we were even married—and you used them to withdraw over $120,000 to fund Marcus’s failed real estate investments. You thought because Daniel was in a combat zone, he wouldn't notice the missing funds. You thought because I was quiet, I would never look at the statements.”

“You ungrateful little brat!” Gloria shrieked, taking a step toward me, her face contorted in rage. “I raised you! I gave you life! Everything we did was for the family! You owe us!”

“She owes you nothing,” Daniel roared, his voice finally breaking its calm exterior, shaking the very foundation of the room. “You struck my wife. You stole from my family. You stole from veterans who have given their lives and limbs for this country. You are not family. You are criminals.”

Special Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his jacket.

“Marcus Vance, Tessa Vance, Gloria Vance. You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, identity theft, grand larceny, and wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent...”

As the agents stepped forward to cuff them, the reality of the situation finally crashed down on them. Tessa began to sob hysterically, dropping to her knees on the floor. Marcus tried to push past one of the agents, only to be swiftly tackled to the ground and pinned against the rug.

Gloria stood frozen, her eyes darting around the room, looking for some escape, some loophole, but there was none. Her prestigious social life, her status, her wealth—all of it was evaporating in a matter of seconds.

As they were led out of the house in handcuffs, their desperate cries and curses fading into the night, the heavy front door finally clicked shut once more.

Leaving only Daniel and me in the quiet, empty hallway.
