Chapter 3 - The Untangling of an EmpireDawn broke over Chicago, painting the grey skyline in cold shades of amber and steel, but inside the Carter estate, time had lost all meaning. The grand ballroom, which had glittered with champagne and expensive gowns less than twelve hours earlier, now resembled a war room.

Boxes of financial records were stacked against the wood-paneled walls. Laptops hummed on every available surface as Nathan and his team of forensic investigators continued to siphon data from Carter Industries' central servers. The police hadn't been called by the Carters—because calling the police would have required explaining the massive financial crimes James had laid out on the mahogany desk. Instead, the Carters were trapped in their own home, prisoners of a legal siege orchestrated with surgical precision.
I sat in the breakfast nook, sipping hot black coffee while watching the sun rise over the manicured lawn. My back still ached, a sharp reminder of the night before, but every sip of coffee felt like a reclaiming of my life.
Daniel walked in, holding a steaming mug of his own, and leaned against the counter beside me.
“How are you holding up?” he asked, his rough exterior melting into genuine concern.
“Better than they are,” I replied, nodding toward the formal drawing room where Robert and Patricia were still whispering frantically to one another, surrounded by empty coffee cups and crushing despair.
“James has already filed the initial divorce papers,” Daniel said, his lips curling into a grim smile. “Because of the physical assault caught on security cameras—which we preserved and backed up in three separate secure locations—this won’t even be a contested divorce. It’s an open-and-shut case of extreme cruelty and domestic abuse. Ethan’s criminal defense attorney dropped him an hour ago.”
“And Vanessa?”
“Crying in the guest wing,” Daniel snorted. “Turns out, her expensive lifestyle was entirely funded by embezzled corporate funds and a string of wealthy men she’d systematically bled dry. Ryan is currently forwarding her financial portfolio to the federal prosecutor's office. She’ll be facing wire fraud charges before the week is out.”
Just then, Ethan walked into the kitchen.
He looked ten years older than he had the night before. His tuxedo was wrinkled, his hair was messy, and the cocky, self-assured smirk that had defined his personality for years was completely gone. He looked like a man who had woken up to find that the ground beneath his feet had turned to ash.
“Emily,” he said, his voice cracking slightly. He stopped a few feet away, hesitant, afraid to come closer.
I didn't turn around. I simply kept my eyes fixed on the garden outside.
“Can we talk? Just... just the two of us?” Ethan pleaded.
“There is nothing left to talk about, Ethan,” I said calmly, setting my coffee cup down on the marble counter.
“I was angry,” he blurted out, stepping closer. “Vanessa whispered in my ear for weeks, telling you were plotting against me, that you were ungrateful... I lost control. But we’ve been married for three years, Emily! Doesn't that mean anything to you?”
I finally turned to face him. I looked at the man who had ordered me tied to a beam, the man who had watched thirty lashes tear into my flesh while his mother laughed.
“Three years ago, Ethan, you convinced me that I was lucky to be loved by a Carter,” I said, my voice steady and cold. “You made me feel small so you could feel tall. You thought my silence was weakness because you’ve never known what real strength looks like. You didn't lose control last night, Ethan. You revealed your true self.”
“I’ll lose everything,” he whispered, his eyes welling with pathetic tears. “The board is holding an emergency meeting at nine o'clock. They’re going to strip me of my title, my shares, my home... everything.”
“Good,” I said simply.
Before Ethan could answer, Michael walked into the kitchen, followed closely by a pair of federal marshals and two corporate board members who looked entirely shaken.
“Ethan Carter?” one of the marshals asked, stepping forward with a folder in hand.
Ethan froze, staring at the silver badge. “What is this?”
“You’re being formally detained for questioning regarding corporate fraud, asset misappropriation, and conspiracy,” the marshal said, stepping up and placing cold steel cuffs around Ethan’s wrists.
Ethan gasped, looking wildly around the room as the metal clicked shut. “No! You can’t do this! This is a family dispute! Emily, tell them!”

I didn't say a word. I just watched as my husband—the master of the house, the billionaire heir who had tried to teach me my place—was led out the back door in handcuffs, past the black SUVs, into the cold light of day.
Patricia shrieked from the drawing room as she watched her son being driven away, but no one rushed to comfort her. The empire had fallen. And the builders had finally been buried beneath the rubble.
