Chapter 4 - The Culling of the House

The chaos that followed inside the limestone estate was not a wild, disorderly riot; it was a surgical, perfectly coordinated execution of power. Within ten minutes of my verdict in the dining room, my enforcers had secured every hallway, locked down every exit, and stripped Ricardo and Doña Victoria of every shred of authority they believed they possessed.

Ricardo was dragged off the floor by two of my heaviest enforcers, his custom Italian suit stained with his own blood, whimpering and screaming empty threats about his rights as a founding member of the syndicate.

"Shut him in the lower wine cellar," I ordered coldly as they hoisted him up by his arms. "No light, no food, no communication. Let him spend a few days contemplating the value of other people's pain."

Doña Victoria did not scream or beg. She stood tall at the head of the mahogany table, her eyes burning with an ancient, venomous hatred that could have melted stone.

"You are a fool, Alejandro," she hissed, her voice shaking with suppressed rage as two guards stepped to her sides. "You think cutting out your own blood makes you a king? It makes you a pariah. When the other syndicates learn that you value a fragile girl over family loyalty, they will tear you apart."

"Let them try," I replied, my expression utterly devoid of emotion. "They will find that I have never been more dangerous."

I ordered her confined to her private west-wing suite, placing a permanent armed guard outside her door. She would live out her remaining years in absolute luxury, but she would do so as a prisoner in the very fortress she believed she commanded.

By mid-afternoon, the estate was quiet again—an eerie, heavy silence that felt like the calm after a devastating hurricane.

I dismissed the capos and legal counsel, retreating to my private study to review the remaining digital trails. Every shell corporation Ricardo had established was systematically dismantled, the assets funneled back into our primary accounts, and the legal documents bearing his forged signatures were shredded and burned in the marble fireplace.

As the flames devoured the fraudulent papers, my phone buzzed on the desk.

It was Mateo, calling from the mountain safehouse.

"Boss," Mateo’s gravelly voice came through the encrypted line. "We’ve secured the perimeter. Everything is clean. Mrs. Vance is resting now. The doctor you requested arrived an hour ago and treated her injuries. She’s sleeping peacefully."

"Did she ask for me?" I asked, the hard armor around my chest softening just a fraction.

"She asked if you were safe," Mateo replied quietly. "And she told me to tell you not to stay in that house alone tonight."

I exhaled a long, shuddering breath, staring into the flickering embers of the fireplace.

"Tell her I'll be there before midnight," I said.

I spent the next several hours conducting a comprehensive audit of every loyalist and traitor within our domestic network. Anyone who had actively assisted Ricardo or looked the other way while Elena was abused was quietly stripped of their rank, stripped of their assets, and permanently exiled from our territory. By sunset, the cancer that had infected my family's legacy for decades had been entirely cut away.

At 11:00 PM, I walked out of the estate’s front doors for the last time as a man burdened by ghosts.

I climbed into the back of my armored SUV, leaving the grand limestone mansion behind under the watchful eyes of my loyal guards. I didn't care about the empty halls, the cold marble, or the glittering chandeliers. A house is nothing more than stone and mortar.

My home was wherever Elena was.
