Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN CAGE AT METRO GENERALThe VIP surgical wing of Metro General Hospital had been cleared out for the Vances. Silas had ensured that no expense was spared, pulling strings with the hospital board to reserve the entire top-tier recovery suite for Bella, treating the public medical facility as if it were his personal country club.

Maya walked down the sterile white corridor in her crisp white lab coat, her stethoscope draped casually around her neck. Her steps were measured, unhurried, carrying the absolute weight of her position as Chief of Thoracic Surgery.
Outside Suite 402, Silas and Elena were pacing back and forth like impatient monarchs. When they saw Maya approaching, Silas’s chest puffed out with immediate, arrogant triumph.
“It’s about time you showed up, Maya,” Silas snapped, adjusting his gold-rimmed cufflinks. “The surgical coordinators have been waiting for your signature on the final consent and asset-binding riders. Lawrence has everything prepared.”
Lawrence Vance, the family’s aging and perpetually nervous corporate attorney, stepped out from the shadows of the waiting room holding a thick leather portfolio filled with legal documents.
Maya stopped a few feet away from them, her expression entirely neutral. “Good morning, Silas. Good morning, Elena. I trust my sister—or rather, the patient—is resting comfortably?”
“Bella is fragile, but she’s holding on,” Elena said, her voice dripping with condescending warmth. She stepped closer, reaching out as if to touch Maya’s arm before Maya instinctively stepped back, making Elena’s hand drop awkwardly to her side. “Don't look so bitter, Maya. Once this procedure is finished, and the family trust is legally re-merged under Silas’s oversight, we might even allow you to attend family dinners again. As a guest, of course.”
Maya had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing out loud at the staggering, bottomless delusion of the woman standing before her.
“Let’s see the paperwork, Lawrence,” Maya said, turning her attention to the trembling attorney.
Lawrence nervously flipped open the portfolio, pointing a shaking finger at a dotted line at the bottom of a complex multi-page financial contract. “Here, Dr. Sterling. This rider stipulates that upon successful completion of the renal transplant, all personal intellectual property, hospital grants, and private holdings accumulated under your medical practice are officially retroactively assigned to the Vance Family Trust, in accordance with your original ward status.”
Silas crossed his arms, smiling down at Maya with absolute predatory satisfaction. “You see, Maya? In the end, everything you built belongs to us. You were just holding it in trust for the family name.”
Maya looked down at the document. Without a single word of hesitation, she pulled a sleek fountain pen from her lab coat pocket, bent over the clipboard, and scrawled her signature across the dotted line in firm, bold strokes using her left hand.
Silas let out a sharp breath of vindicated laughter, snatching the clipboard from Lawrence’s hands as if he had just conquered a kingdom. “There! It’s done! The prodigal daughter finally learned her place!”
“Indeed it is,” Maya said softly, straightening up and slipping her pen back into her pocket. She turned her gaze toward the heavy wooden doors of the surgical suite, where the medical staff was wheeling a pale, frightened Bella down the hall toward the operating theater.
“I’ll see you both in recovery,” Maya said, her voice carrying a strange, chilling cadence that made Silas pause for a fraction of a second. But blinded by his victory, he brushed the unease aside.

As Maya donned her scrubs and scrubbed in at the surgical sink, she looked down at her hands—her famous left hand, the hand her father had cursed as flawed and sinister. She flexed her fingers, feeling the absolute, divine precision of her muscle memory.
Today, that hand was going to perform a miracle. And it was going to sign the death warrant of the Vance dynasty.
