Chapter 4 - The Truth Prevails

Claire’s attorney tried to speak, but the judge silenced him with a sharp wave of her hand.
"I have seen enough for an emergency ruling," Judge Henderson declared, her gavel resting heavily in her hand. "Temporary sole legal and physical custody of both Valerie and Mateo is awarded immediately to the father, Ethan Miller. Furthermore, a temporary restraining order is issued against Claire Miller. She is to remain at least 500 feet away from the children, their school, and the father's residence. The court will refer this matter to the District Attorney for criminal prosecution regarding child endangerment."
Bang. The gavel fell.
A massive weight lifted off my shoulders, but I knew the war wasn't completely over. A temporary order was just a shield; I needed a permanent fortress to ensure Claire could never hurt my family again.
In the weeks that followed, the criminal investigation intensified. With the security footage, the resort records, and the text messages made public in court, Claire’s social circle evaporated overnight. The wealthy family that had funded her high-priced lawyers began to distance themselves to protect their own reputations.
Meanwhile, at home, the healing process began. I took an extended leave of absence from the military, transitioning into a desk-bound advisory role at the local base so I would never have to travel overnight again. My primary mission was now entirely focused within the walls of my own home.
Valerie started seeing a child psychologist who specialized in trauma. In the first few sessions, she wouldn't talk. She would only draw pictures of a large, dark shadow towering over a little girl. But slowly, with time and unyielding reassurance, she began to open up.
One afternoon, I walked into the living room to find Valerie sitting on the floor with Rex. She was gently brushing his fur, and for the first time in months, I heard her laugh—a light, musical sound I feared I had lost forever.
"Look, Daddy," she said, pointing to Rex, who was completely asleep, his tail giving a lazy thump against the rug. "Rex says his back doesn't hurt at all when I brush him."
I knelt down and pulled her into a tight hug. "Your back will never have to hurt like that again, Val. I promise you. You are a kid. Your only job is to play, learn, and be loved."
"And look after Mateo?" she asked quietly.
May you like
"No," I said firmly, looking her in the eyes. "Mateo is my job. Being a big sister just means loving him. I will handle the rest."
As the months passed, the local District Attorney formally filed felony charges against Claire. Facing overwhelming evidence and the threat of a lengthy prison sentence, her arrogance finally crumbled. Her lawyers approached Marcus with an offer for a full, uncontested divorce settlement. They were desperate to avoid a public criminal trial that would completely ruin her family's name.
