Chapter 5 - Turning the TablesBefore Graham could take another breath, I grabbed the iron crowbar with both hands and swung it with every ounce of strength left in my body.

The heavy iron bar slammed directly into his right wrist with a sickening CRACK.
Graham let out a hoarse shriek of pain as the gun flew from his shattered hand, clattering across the slick concrete floor and sliding beneath the black SUV.
"You crazy bitch!" he screamed, clutching his broken wrist as blood welled beneath his sleeve.
He lunged toward me with his left arm, his massive weight knocking me against the workbench. Monitors crashed to the floor, shattering in a shower of sparks and glass. We hit the concrete ground together, Graham’s heavy hand clamping around my throat, shutting off my air supply instantly.
"You think you can ruin my life?" Graham growled into my face, his bloodshot eyes bulging with manic rage. "I built this empire! I am NOT going back to prison!"
My vision began to darken around the edges. Black spots danced before my eyes as his grip tightened on my windpipe.
Lucy, my mind screamed. If I die here, he kills Lucy.
I reached out blindly with my right hand, my fingers clawing at the concrete floor. My nails struck a sharp, jagged piece of metal—a six-inch steel soldering iron sitting on the lower shelf of the overturned workbench.
With a final, desperate surge of maternal instinct, I slammed the sharp steel point directly into Graham’s thigh.
Graham roared in agony, his grip instantly loosening from my throat as he recoiled backward, clutching his bleeding leg.
I scrambled backward on my hands and knees, drawing air violently into my burning lungs. I didn't run for the door. I lunged beneath the black SUV, my fingers sweeping across the dust until they wrapped around the cold, heavy handle of his handgun.
I pulled myself out from under the car, stood up, and raised the weapon with both hands.
"Get up," I rasped, my voice raw and bleeding, the barrel of the gun locked steadily onto his chest.
Graham lay on his side on the blood-stained concrete, gasping, his hands slick with his own blood. He looked up at me, and for the very first time in fourteen years, I saw fear in his eyes.
"Sarah..." he stammered, his arrogant composure evaporating into pathetic desperation. "Sarah, wait... please. Think about this. We can work this out. There's nine million dollars in those accounts! I can give you half! You and Lucy can live like royalty anywhere in the world!"
"You offered me a bomb under my floorboards, Graham," I said, my finger resting firmly against the trigger guard. "I think I'll take justice instead."
The heavy double doors of the loading dock suddenly burst open with a deafening crash.
"BOSTON POLICE! FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
A dozen tactical officers in black body armor swarmed the warehouse, their high-powered flashlight beams blinding the dark room, laser sights pinning Graham to the floor.
Behind them stepped Detective Marcus Kane of the State Police Major Crimes Unit—the officer I had secretly transmitted the warehouse location and raw hard drive files to twenty minutes earlier using the encrypted proxy network from the diner.
"Hands where we can see them! On the floor now!" Kane bellowed.
I slowly lowered the weapon, setting it gently on the hood of the SUV, and stepped back with my hands raised.
Detective Kane looked from Graham, who was currently being pinned and handcuffed by three federal officers, to me. He saw the blood on my neck, the crowbar on the floor, and the mountain of printed financial evidence glowing on the surviving computer screen.
Kane walked over, pulled off his heavy tactical gloves, and gently draped his own warm wool jacket over my bruised shoulders.
"Mrs. Vance," Kane said softly, his eyes filled with profound respect. "Your daughter is safe. An officer is bringing her from the diner right now. It's over."

I looked down at Graham as he was hoisted to his feet in heavy steel chains, his leg bleeding, his face contorted in defeat as federal agents read him his rights under a dozens of counts of attempted murder, arson, insurance fraud, and federal conspiracy.
He looked at me one last time, opening his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He was no longer a criminal mastermind. He was just a pathetic, hollow man who had traded his humanity for money, and lost everything.
