Chapter 6 - The New ReignThe Los Angeles Superior Court family division courtroom was quiet, cool, and smelled faintly of floor wax and old paper.

It was 10:00 AM on Monday morning.
I sat at the petitioner’s table wearing a crisp, tailored white blazer dress and classic black heels, my posture upright and relaxed. Arthur Pendelton sat beside me, organizing the final stamped divorce decree and the formal name-restoration paperwork.
Across the aisle sat Luca’s public defender—a tired-looking man in a rumpled suit who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else on earth. Luca himself wasn't even present in the courtroom; he had waived his appearance, choosing to remain in his holding cell rather than face the humiliation of walking into a courtroom where his soon-to-be-ex-wife held all the cards.
The Honorable Judge Evelyn Vance—no relation to Luca’s family, thankfully—adjusted her glasses and looked down from the elevated mahogany bench, reviewing the final packet of documents.
"Well, counsel," Judge Vance said, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtroom. "The terms of this uncontested dissolution of marriage are exceptionally clear. Prenuptial protections validated, pre-marital trust assets fully preserved, all fraudulent conveyances reversed, and the petitioner's maiden name restored in full."
She picked up her heavy wooden gavel.
"This court finds the settlement fair, equitable, and legally binding. The divorce is officially granted, and the marriage of Jessica Sterling and Luca Sterling is hereby dissolved."
Thunk.
The gavel came down. A sharp, definitive sound that marked the end of a three-year prison sentence disguised as a marriage.
"Thank you, Your Honor," Arthur said politely on my behalf.
"Congratulations, Ms. Sterling," the judge added, offering me a subtle, knowing nod of professional respect before calling the next case on the docket.
Ten minutes later, Arthur and I walked out of the courthouse double doors into the brilliant, golden California sunshine. The morning air was crisp and fresh, carrying the scent of jacaranda trees blooming along Grand Avenue.
"Well, Jessi," Arthur said, sliding his leather briefcase into his left hand and offering his right hand to me. "It’s official. You are completely free. And more importantly, Carter & Sterling Holdings is posting record-breaking Q3 yields following the corporate restructuring."
I shook his hand firmly, a bright, genuine smile spreading across my face. "Thank you, Arthur. For your loyalty, your discretion, and your brilliant legal strategy through all of this."
"It was my absolute honor," Arthur smiled. "Your grandfather would have been profoundly proud of how you handled yourself."
We parted ways at the corner of Grand Avenue and First Street. Arthur headed toward the financial district offices, while I walked toward my waiting chauffeured black SUV parked curbside.
As I slid into the leather backseat of the SUV, my phone chimed with a notification.
It wasn't a frantic text. It was a digital alert from my investment portfolio manager summarizing our morning asset acquisitions.
I swiped the notification away, locked my phone, and looked out the tinted window as the vehicle pulled smoothly into traffic, heading downtown toward the headquarters of Sterling & Carter Global.
The people who had tried to shrink my world, drain my resources, and treat my kindness like a weakness were gone—relegated to the footnotes of a past life where they belonged.

My cheek no longer hurt. The fear was entirely gone.
I was Jessica Sterling. The estate, the empire, the future—every single brick of it was mine. And as the city skyline rose up to meet us in the morning light, I knew that the true reign had only just begun.
