Chapter 5 - The $5,000 Reality CheckAttorney Miller stood up slowly, looking like he wanted nothing more than to crawl under the defense table. “Your Honor… even if the property and past funding originated with Mrs. Whitaker, my client still requires temporary maintenance while he adjusts to this sudden separation, particularly given the disruption to his corporate credit—”

“Counsel,” Judge Sterling interrupted, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. “Your client came into my courtroom demanding emergency custody of assets he does not own, accusing his wife of financial sabotage when she merely cut off his access to her personal fortune, and attempting to weaponize this court to bully a pregnant woman.”
The courtroom went dead silent.
The word pregnant hung in the air like a dropped stone.
Brenda’s head snapped up. “What did she say?”
Arthur turned to face the judge, a grim, satisfied smile touching the corner of his mouth. “Indeed, Your Honor. Not only is Mrs. Whitaker the sole owner of the residence, the accounts, and the business assets, but she is also currently twelve weeks pregnant with the petitioner’s child—a fact which Mr. Whitaker and his family chose to dismiss as a ‘convenient manipulation’ when it was announced last week.”
Judge Sterling’s expression darkened into absolute fury. She looked down at Thomas with a glare so intense it practically scorched the paint off his chair.
“Mr. Whitaker,” the judge said, her voice dropping into a quiet, terrifying register. “You asked your wife of seven years for a divorce on the spot, brought your mistress—pardon me, your sister and her dependents—into her home to evict her while she was carrying your child, and then had the staggering audacity to march into my courtroom demanding she pay you support?”
“Judge, please—” Thomas choked out, half-rising from his chair.
“Sit down!” she bellowed, slamming her gavel down with a force that made the water pitcher rattle.
She took a deep breath, smoothing her notes before looking directly at me, her expression softening into something resembling professional respect.
“Mrs. Whitaker,” Judge Sterling said clearly. “The court denies the petitioner’s motion for emergency relief, temporary alimony, and exclusive occupancy in its entirety. Furthermore, based on the fraudulent misrepresentation of assets presented in this motion, I am ordering the petitioner to immediately vacate the Oakridge Lane property within forty-eight hours, with all moving and storage expenses to be personally covered by Mr. Whitaker.”
She looked back at Thomas and his stunned lawyer.
“As for the $5,000 private school tuition for Master Tyler,” Judge Sterling added with a devastating smirk, “since Mr. Whitaker insists he is the head of the household and the sole provider, I am ordering that invoice to be settled directly out of his personal checking account within twenty-four hours. Court is adjourned.”
