Chapter 2 - The Security Footage

Suite 812 was quiet, warm, and bathed in the soft, ambient glow of late-night city lights streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
After bathing Maya in a deep, warm garden tub, washing away the cold dust of the hotel carpet from her bare feet, I tucked her into a massive plush king-sized bed. I wrapped her in two heavy down blankets, placed her favorite stuffed rabbit—Barnaby—into her arms, and sat on the edge of the mattress, running my fingers through her damp curls until her soft, rhythmic breathing signaled she had finally drifted into sleep.
Even in her sleep, her tiny fingers gripped my sweater cuff like a lifeline.
At 2:45 AM, a quiet knock sounded at the suite door.
I carefully unclasped Maya’s little fingers from my sleeve, slipped out of the bed, and walked over to the door. Through the peephole, I saw Mrs. Gable standing beside a tall, dark-haired man in an elegant charcoal suit.
I opened the door softly, stepping out into the carpeted vestibule and pulling the door almost shut behind me.
"Ms. Thorne," Mrs. Gable whispered respectfully. "I am so sorry to disturb you at this hour, but this is Mr. Julian Vance. He is the Chief Risk Officer and Executive Director of Security for the Grand Regency Hotel Group."
Julian Vance offered a grim, respectful nod. He looked to be in his late thirties, with sharp gray eyes and a commanding presence that radiated quiet authority.
"Ms. Thorne," Mr. Vance said, his voice a low, soothing baritone. "I was briefed on the incident twenty minutes ago at my residence and drove straight here. What happened to your daughter tonight is a severe violation of child safety, and as the head of security for this franchise, I take full responsibility for ensuring this is handled with total transparency."
He held up an iPad tablet.
"Our technical team has reviewed and extracted the camera footage from the sixth-floor corridor," Mr. Vance continued, his expression hardening. "I felt you had a legal and maternal right to see it before we make our official report."
My stomach churned into a tight knot. I took the tablet into my hands, my thumbs trembling as Mr. Vance pressed the play button on the screen.
The black-and-white video footage was crystal clear, timestamped at 10:12 PM.
On the screen, Room 614's door opened sharply.
My sister, Chloe, stepped out into the hallway, holding six-year-old Maya aggressively by both upper arms. Maya was wearing her yellow polka-dot pajamas, her small legs kicking frantically as she tried to pull back into the room.
The camera had no audio, but Chloe's face was twisted in a sharp, furious snarl. She shoveled Maya backward out into the hallway, forcing her onto the carpet.
Then, my heart shattered into a thousand jagged pieces as I watched what happened next.
Maya reached down to grab her little pink sneakers that were resting near the threshold. Chloe leaned down, snatched both shoes right out of the child's hands, tossed them back inside the room, and stepped backward.
Before shutting the door, Chloe pointed a long, menacing finger at Maya's face, saying something with terrifying intensity.
Then, Chloe pulled the heavy timber door shut. The automatic magnetic lock clicked into place with a subtle green light indicator on the handle.
On the video, Maya stood alone in the wide, empty corridor. She ran to the door, her tiny fists pounding against the solid wood. She banged on it for nearly ten minutes straight, her little shoulders heaving with uncontrollable sobs.
Then, the lights in the hallway dimmed automatically as part of the hotel's late-night energy-saving system.
For the next two hours and forty minutes, the camera captured the agonizing ordeal of my innocent child.
She sat against the door, shivering in her thin cotton pajamas. Around 11:30 PM, a guest walked far down the opposite end of the hall, and Maya had cowered in fear, sliding away from the door and hiding inside the dark alcove beside the ice machine, terrified of strangers in the night.
She stayed in that dark corner, hugging her knees to her chest, shivering continuously until 1:10 AM, when the elevator doors opened and I stepped out.
By the time the video ended, my vision was completely blurred by hot, bitter tears. I gripped the edges of the iPad so tightly my knuckles turned chalk white.
"She pushed her," I choked out, a sob tearing through my throat. "She took her shoes... she locked her out in the dark... and she sat inside watching television."
"Yes," Julian Vance said softly, his gray eyes burning with cold anger. "Ms. Thorne, this is not a 'family discipline dispute.' This is felony child endangerment, unlawful restraint of a minor, and severe emotional abuse."
"Where is she now?" I demanded, wiping the tears from my cheeks with the back of my hand.
"Your sister attempted to leave the property at 2:00 AM," Mrs. Gable informed me. "However, Mr. Vance instructed our security team to detain her vehicle at the parking garage gate until the Metropolitan Police arrived."
"The police are here?" I asked.
"They are downstairs in the private security office right now, Ms. Thorne," Julian Vance stated firmly. "Detective Sarah Miller from the Special Victims Unit is waiting to take your statement and secure this footage as primary evidence. If you are ready, I will walk down with you."
I took a deep, steadying breath, turning back to glance through the cracked door at my sleeping daughter.
The woman who had given birth to me, our mother, had spent thirty years covering up Chloe's cruel, narcissistic behavior, constantly forcing me to apologize and sacrifice to keep the peace in our broken family.

Not anymore, I thought to myself. Not at my daughter's expense.
"Let's go," I said to Julian Vance. "I want to file every charge possible."
