Chapter 3 - The Fortress of Lies

By 9:00 AM the following morning, the news of Vanessa Vance’s arrest had exploded across the front pages of the regional newspapers and local news networks.
PROMINENT ATTORNEY'S DAUGHTER ARRESTED IN BRUTAL ASSAULT ON 6-YEAR-OLD NIECE SHOCKING KITCHEN SECURITY FOOTAGE EXPOSES FAMILY COVER-UP
In the quiet, upscale neighborhood where my parents lived, the grand brick home that had once been a fortress of arrogance was now surrounded by news vans, flashing camera lights, and curious neighbors staring from their lawns.
Inside the living room, the atmosphere was chaotic and toxic.
My father, Richard, paced franticly back and forth across the Persian rug, clutching a glass of straight bourbon despite the early hour. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his phone rang continuously on the coffee table.
"They terminated my partnership!" Richard screamed, throwing his glass into the cold fireplace, where it shattered into a hundred glittering shards. "Victoria Sterling personally revoked my security badge! My name is being scrubbed from the firm's stationery as we speak!"
Eleanor sat on the velvet sofa, her eyes swollen and red from crying, holding a cold damp washcloth against her forehead.
"Call the district attorney, Richard!" Eleanor whimpered shrilly. "Explain to him who we are! We donate to his re-election campaign every year! He can't keep Vanessa in that county jail! She had to sleep on a concrete bench last night!"
"The DA isn't taking my calls!" Richard roared, slamming his hands onto the back of a chair. "The media got hold of the video transcript, Eleanor! The transcript! Every news anchor in the state is reading the part where you held Clara's arms while the baby was bleeding on the floor!"
The heavy mahogany front door clicked open.
Arthur Pendelton—the high-priced criminal defense attorney Richard had hired using his remaining liquid savings—stepped into the foyer, looking exhausted and grim.
"Arthur!" Eleanor gasped, springing from the sofa. "Did you post Vanessa's bail? Is she outside?"
Arthur pulled off his leather gloves and set his briefcase down, shaking his head slowly.
"The judge denied bail," Arthur revealed flatly.
Eleanor gasped, clutching her heart. "Denied bail?! On what grounds?!"
"On the grounds that Vanessa Vance presents an active, violent threat to the victim and the community," Arthur explained, pulling a sheaf of court papers from his bag. "The prosecution presented the audio-video logs in court twenty minutes ago. The judge took five seconds to watch the clip before revoking bail entirely. Vanessa will remain in the County Detention Center until trial."
Richard slumped into his armchair, burying his face in his trembling hands. "What about us, Arthur? The police interviewed Clara last night."
Arthur looked at Richard and Eleanor with zero sympathy.
"The District Attorney has officially filed formal criminal charges against both of you," Arthur stated coldly. "Richard, you are being charged with Class-B Felony Child Endangerment and Accessory to Assault. Eleanor, you are being charged with Felony Obstruction of Justice, False Imprisonment, and Child Endangerment."
"False imprisonment?!" Eleanor shrieked. "I just held my daughter! She's my daughter!"
"You forcibly restrained a mother from rendering life-saving medical aid to an unconscious child," Arthur countered sharp. "The jury is going to hate you, Eleanor. When they see that video... when they see the photograph of that six-year-old girl’s bloody yellow dress... they are going to want to lock all three of you away for the maximum statutory limit."
"We need to make a deal," Richard stammered, his arrogant composure entirely destroyed. "We'll pay for the medical bills! We'll give Clara money! Tell her we'll transfer the deed to the beach house to her name if she drops the charges!"
Arthur let out a quiet, bitter laugh.
"Clara didn't bring these charges, Richard. The State of Maryland brought them. And Clara's legal representative is Victoria Sterling. Victoria has already executed an emergency freeze on all your joint bank accounts, your retirement portfolio, and this very house to satisfy a five-million-dollar civil lawsuit."
"They frozen our accounts?!" Eleanor screamed, turning pale as chalk. "How are we supposed to live?! How are we supposed to pay you?!"
Arthur picked up his leather gloves and pulled his briefcase back onto his shoulder.
May you like
"You aren't," Arthur said flatly, walking toward the door. "Because as of five minutes ago, I am withdrawing as your counsel. Good morning."
The heavy front door clicked shut, leaving Richard and Eleanor standing in the silent, empty room of their crumbling palace.
