Chapter 3 - The Price of ApplauseBy evening, the news had broken across every major financial network and entertainment headline in the country.

HALE MERIDIAN HALTS TRADING AMID FEDERAL FRAUD PROBE. ESTATE BATTLE ROCKS HOLLYWOOD: THE DARK TRUTH BEHIND THE HALE DYNASTY. DEAD SISTER'S WILL REVEALS HIDDEN EMPIRE COLLAPSE.

The grand marble foyer of the Hale estate was littered with empty moving boxes, discarded scripts, and the silent ghosts of a dynasty built on sand.

Victor sat in his private study, a half-empty bottle of bourbon on the desk before him. The phone was ringing incessantly—investors canceling meetings, publicists resigning, lawyers dropping his defense. The great media titan had been reduced to a frightened, hollow man in a rumpled suit.

The heavy oak door creaked open.

Serena walked in, carrying a single manila envelope.

Victor didn't look up from his glass. "Are you here to gloat? To kick me out of the house we grew up in?"

"No, Victor," Serena said, setting the envelope on the desk. "I'm here to offer you an exit."

Victor scoffed bitterly. "An exit? To where? Federal prison?"

"The SEC has agreed to a deferred prosecution agreement for the executive board," Serena said evenly. "Provided that you step down as CEO immediately, forfeit all remaining shares to the newly established Greco-Mercer Foundation, and sign a full public confession detailing how you systematically falsified corporate earnings and suppressed intellectual property rights."

Victor stared at her, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "And if I refuse?"

"Then Arthur Vance hands the unredacted offshore bank records to the Department of Justice tomorrow morning. You’ll be wearing orange before the weekend."

Victor slumped back in his leather chair, the fight completely drained out of him. He looked old, tired, and utterly defeated. He picked up a pen with trembling fingers, signed the confession without reading another word, and pushed the paper across the desk.

"Are you happy now, Serena?" Victor whispered, staring at the wall. "You got your company. You got your revenge. You destroyed everything Dad built."

"Dad didn't build an empire, Victor," Serena said, turning toward the door. "He built a prison. And I’m just tearing down the walls."
