Chapter 3 - The Freezing of the Dream

The bridal boutique L’Étoile in West Hartford was the kind of establishment that required a six-month waiting list just to cross the threshold. It was a palace of silk, tulle, and old-money exclusivity, illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers and serviced by soft-spoken consultants who served champagne on silver platters.

At 4:15 PM on Friday, Victoria stood on the velvet-lined pedestal in the center of the grand salon, surrounded by three junior seamstresses who were meticulously pinning the lace train of her custom-made, twenty-two-thousand-dollar Vera Wang gown. Her mother-in-law-to-be, the notoriously snobbish Mrs. Genevieve Montgomery, sat on the plush gray sofa, nodding with approval as she sipped her Mimosa.

"The lace is exquisite, Victoria," Genevieve murmured, adjusting her pearl necklace. "It’s exactly what a Montgomery bride should look like. The Belmont ballroom will provide the perfect backdrop for this silhouette."

"Thank you, Genevieve," Victoria smiled, her face radiant with absolute, untouchable arrogance. She turned slightly, looking at her reflection in the triple-paned mirror, her giant engagement ring catching the light. "I had to handle some... difficult family administrative issues this week, but everything is officially settled. Dad's estate has taken care of the remaining venue fees."

Suddenly, the heavy glass front doors of the boutique were pushed open with a sharp, echoing chime.

Instead of another high-society bride, two uniform officers from the Hartford Police Department stepped into the salon, accompanied by a tall, sharp-featured woman carrying a thick, red leather folder. It was Evelyn Sterling.

The head consultant gasped, rushing forward. "Excuse me! This is a private fitting! You cannot be in here!"

Evelyn ignored her completely, her sharp eyes scanning the room until they locked onto Victoria standing on the pedestal. "Victoria Brennan?" Evelyn announced, her voice cutting through the soft classical music like a razor blade.

Victoria’s smile faltered, her hand instinctively dropping to the silk skirt of her gown. "Who are you? What is the meaning of this?"

The senior police officer stepped forward, pulling a document from his belt. "Ms. Brennan, we are here to serve an emergency civil injunction issued by the Hartford Superior Court, along with a formal criminal summons for grand larceny, forgery, and felony aggravated assault."

Genevieve Montgomery stood up so quickly her champagne flute spilled onto the velvet rug. "What? Assault? Larceny? This is absurd! Do you know who we are?"

"We know exactly who she is, ma'am," the officer replied, walking up to the edge of the pedestal. "Victoria Brennan, as of 3:15 PM today, an emergency asset freeze has been executed on your personal checking accounts, your savings accounts, and any joint lines tied to your name. Furthermore, a civil lien has been placed on the funds transferred to the Belmont Estate venue due to documented corporate fraud."

Victoria’s face drained of color, turning a sickening, chalky white that matched her gown. "No... no, that’s impossible! My sister... Clara is in the hospital! She’s... she’s incapacitated! She couldn't have signed anything!"

"Dr. Clara Brennan is the Chief Executive Officer of St. Jude’s Memorial, Victoria," Evelyn Sterling said, stepping closer, her voice dripping with clinical disdain. "She doesn't need to walk to sign a corporate execution order. Your unauthorized withdrawal of fifty thousand dollars using a deceased man's power of attorney has been flagged as federal bank fraud. The Belmont Estate has already been served with a temporary restraining order. They have cancelled your reservation, voided your contract, and returned the remaining funds to the legal estate account."

"Cancelled?" Victoria shrieked, the word tearing from her throat like a siren. She stumbled on the pedestal, the lace train catching on a seamstress’s pins, tearing with a loud, sickening rip. "No! The Belmont can’t cancel me! The wedding is in six weeks! The invitations have already been sent to every family in the registry!"

"Then you had better start sending out the retraction cards, Ms. Brennan," Evelyn replied coldly. "Because if you step foot on the Belmont property, you will be arrested for criminal trespass. You have twenty-four hours to return the original estate files and your sister’s briefcase to Mr. Patterson’s office, or the police will return with an active arrest warrant that will be executed publicly."

Genevieve Montgomery stared at Victoria, her eyes wide with deep, aristocratic horror. "Victoria... what is this woman talking about? Did you forge your father's signature? Did you assault your sister?"

"Genevieve, no! It's a lie! Clara is trying to ruin me because she's jealous!" Victoria cried, reaching out her hands desperately, but the older woman shrank away, her face twisting into an expression of profound disgust.

"Do not touch me, Victoria," Genevieve whispered, picking up her designer handbag. "The Montgomery name will not be dragged through a criminal court ledger. This wedding... this whole arrangement... is suspended until my son receives a full explanation from his legal counsel."

As Genevieve marched out of the salon, Victoria collapsed onto her knees on the pedestal, the pristine white silk of her twenty-two-thousand-dollar dress crumpling beneath her as she let out a raw, desperate wail of absolute defeat. The high-society dream she had built on a foundation of violence and theft had just turned into a prison of ice.
