Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Terminal

The digital clock on the marble fireplace read 3:14 AM when Marcus Thorne entered the penthouse living room.

His tie was undone, his collar unbuttoned, and he carried a black tablet under his arm. He looked at Ava, who was currently asleep on the sofa under a soft cashmere throw blanket, her face peaceful for the first time in days, before turning his gaze to William.

William was standing at his desk, reviewing a series of corporate bank ledgers and wire transfer records that his forensic accountants had pulled from Grace's private accounts over the last three hours.

"It matches," William said without looking up. "Every dollar. Grace made eight wire transfers of twenty-five thousand dollars each over the last eighteen months to an offshore account registered under the name E. Reed Logistics in the Cayman Islands."

"Evelyn Reed," Thorne said grimly, sliding into the leather chair across from William. "She wasn't just extorting Grace, William. She was using that money to fund her local operations in California. I had my investigators run a deep trace on Evelyn’s background over the last two hours."

Thorne tapped the screen of his tablet and turned it toward William.

"Your wife’s letter was completely accurate," Thorne explained, his voice low and clinical. "Evelyn Reed operated an illegal adoption broker service under the guise of an independent foster care advocacy program in northern California for over twenty years. She targeted underage girls, runaway teens, and undocumented mothers—women who couldn't go to the police. She forged birth certificates, altered medical records, and sold infants to high-bidding buyers."

William’s hands clenched into tight fists atop the marble desk. "And Ava?"

"Ava was meant to be her final payday," Thorne said. "Evelyn knew that as Ava grew older, her resemblance to Grace would become impossible to ignore. When Grace died, the wire transfers stopped. Evelyn lost her income stream. That's why she brought Ava to New York, William."

"She didn't just come to reclaim Ava," William realized, his eyes narrowing into deadly slits. "She came to extort me."

"Precisely," Thorne agreed. "Evelyn filed a formal custody challenge in California three days ago, claiming Ava was being held by an unfit guardian—referring to Grace's memory. She was preparing to file a massive public paternity and custody suit against your estate, using Ava as the central piece of evidence to demand a multi-million-dollar settlement from Hart Global Enterprises."

"Where is she now?" William asked.

"She’s currently staying at a budget hotel near JFK, backed by two high-priced criminal defense attorneys paid for by an unknown third party," Thorne replied.

William raised an eyebrow. "A third party?"

"Someone else is funding her, William," Thorne revealed, tapping the screen to bring up a second document. "The retainers for those attorneys were wired from an investment firm in Chicago. Vanguard Holdings."

William felt a cold, familiar anger surge through his veins. Vanguard Holdings was owned by Richard Sterling—his primary corporate rival, a man who had tried to execute a hostile takeover of Hart Global during the months following Grace's death when William had been blinded by grief.

Sterling had realized that if he could orchestrate a massive public scandal involving William Hart, a fraudulent adoption ring, and a secret illegitimate child, Hart Global’s stock would plummet, allowing Vanguard to buy up controlling shares for pennies on the dollar.

They hadn't just targeted his family. They had weaponized his late wife's deepest trauma to destroy everything he had built.

William stood up slowly. The exhaustion that had weighed him down on the flight from Los Angeles was completely gone, replaced by a ruthless, absolute focus.

"Marcus," William said, his tone drop-dead quiet.

"Yes, William?"

"Call the District Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Tell him I am hosting a private conference at eight o'clock this morning in the boardroom of Hart Global Headquarters."

"Who am I inviting?" Thorne asked, a dark smile touching his lips.

"Invite Richard Sterling. Invite Evelyn Reed and her attorneys," William said, his eyes burning with an unholy fire. "And bring two units of federal marshals."

Thorne stood up and straightened his cuffs. "Consider it done. What about Ava?"

William looked over at the sleeping girl on the sofa. "Ava is coming with me. It's time she sees what happens when someone tries to hurt a Hart."
