Chapter 4 - The Shattering of the Ego

The fall from grace was not a slow descent; it was a vertical drop into absolute obscurity. Deprived of the trust's bottomless wealth, Ethan and Vanessa quickly discovered how fragile their high-society life truly was. Within forty-eight hours, the luxury SUVs were repossessed by the leasing firm, which was owned by a subsidiary of the Mercer Trust. The Greenwich estate was locked down tight, surrounded by a new security team that refused to let even their closest friends past the outer gates.
Forced to rent a cramped, outdated two-bedroom apartment in a noisy section of Bridgeport, the couple found themselves facing a reality they had mocked for years.
Vanessa sat on a cheap plastic packing crate in the middle of their tiny living room, her manicured nails broken, her expensive silk blouse stained with dust. "This is your fault, Ethan! You told me she was broke! You told me she was just a dependent old woman living off our charity! You lied to me!"
"I didn't lie!" Ethan shouted back, pacing the small room like a caged animal. "She kept it hidden for thirty years! My father helped her build that wall of secrecy! How was I supposed to know she controlled that much capital?"
"You pushed her!" Vanessa screamed, her voice rising above the sound of the traffic outside the window. "You had to be the big man, right? You had to shove her through the door! If you hadn't touched her, we would still be in the mansion! We would still have the black cards!"
A heavy knock at the door interrupted their shouting match.
Ethan pulled the door open, expecting a food delivery or a neighbor complaining about the noise. Instead, he was met by Detective Ramirez of the Greenwich Police Department, accompanied by a process server.
"Ethan Vance?" the detective asked, his tone clinical and cold.
"Yes?" Ethan stammered, stepping back.
"You are under arrest for domestic assault in the second degree, reckless endangerment, and injury to an elder," Detective Ramirez stated, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Vanessa gasped, covering her mouth as the detective stepped into the room and turned Ethan around, locking his wrists behind his back.
"Vanessa! Call a lawyer!" Ethan panicked, his voice cracking as he was led toward the doorway. "Call Arthur Pendelton! Tell him to post bail!"

"Mr. Pendelton’s firm has already declined representation due to a conflict of interest with the Mercer Trust, Mrs. Vance," the process server spoke up, stepping forward and handing a thick blue folder directly to Vanessa. "And this is for you. A formal summons for a civil lawsuit seeking 5 million dollars in damages for emotional distress, complicity in assault, and conspiracy to commit financial fraud against Eleanor Mercer."
Vanessa stared at the blue folder in her hands, her knees buckling as she slid onto the linoleum floor. The man she had married for his money was being led away in chains, and the wealth she had used to terrorize others had become a legal weapon designed to strip her of whatever dignity she had left.
