Chapter 5 - Upstairs CelebrationUpstairs in the grand ballroom, the music was playing softly, and guests were laughing over flutes of vintage champagne.

Graham Whitmore stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, wearing a bespoke Italian tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch while telling a group of local investors about his upcoming logistics expansion.

“Ironline’s northern routes are about to undergo a complete restructuring,” Graham was saying with a confident smirk. “By next month, my brokerage will control ninety percent of regional distribution.”

The heavy mahogany double doors at the entrance of the ballroom suddenly swung open with a loud bang.

The music cut off instantly.

Heads turned.

Walking through the doorway was not a guest.

It was me.

My work shirt was stained with grease and dirt, my coat was torn at the shoulder, and my boots tracked wet mud across the pristine white marble flooring. Beside me, supported by two paramedics, walked Julian, pale and bandaged, his right leg braced in a rigid splint.

And right behind us walked four uniformed police officers with their shields gleaming under the crystal chandeliers.

Gasps echoed through the room. Several socialites stepped back in horror, spilling their drinks.

Graham’s face lost every trace of color. His glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor, the golden scotch splashing across his polished shoes.

“What... what is the meaning of this?” Graham stammered, stepping forward, trying to regain his composure. “Security! How did these vagrants get in here?”

“Your security is currently face-down in the basement concrete,” I said, my voice echoing clearly across the silent ballroom.

Graham’s eyes darted toward the doors, searching for Vance, finding only armed police officers blocking every exit.

From the front of the crowd, Lena pushed her way forward, her face twisted in absolute panic. She looked at Julian, then at me, her voice shrill.

“You ruin everything!” she shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me. “You filthy old truck driver! You have no right to be here! This is our home!”

“Our home?” Julian spoke up, his voice cracking with emotion, cutting through the silence like a knife. “You watched your father’s men break my knee, Lena. You stood right there and handed them the tape to bind my arms while you planned which accounts you were going to drain tomorrow morning.”

The guests recoiled from Lena in disgust, murmuring angrily among themselves as the reality of the horror show hidden beneath their feet set in.

Captain Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt.

“Graham Whitmore. Lena Whitmore. You are both under arrest for conspiracy, kidnapping, attempted murder, and financial fraud,” the captain declared, his voice ringing through the room.

As the officers moved in and snapped the cuffs onto Graham’s wrists, the arrogant corporate broker slumped forward, all his power and bluster evaporating into thin air. Lena began to sob wildly, screaming curses as she was dragged past the very guests she had toasted just minutes earlier.
