Chapter 2 - THE WAKE-UP CALLThe sterile smell of antiseptic and ozone hung heavy in Room 604 of Nashville Memorial Hospital.

Diane sat in the uncomfortable vinyl armchair beside Rachel’s bed, her fingers intertwined with her daughter’s limp, pale hand. The rhythmic beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor was the only sound keeping time in the quiet room.

Rachel’s eyelids fluttered. A faint, dry cough escaped her cracked lips.

"Mom?" Rachel whispered, her voice sounding like dry paper rubbing together.

Diane sprang up instantly, pouring a small cup of water and pressing a damp sponge against Rachel’s parched lips. "I’m here, sweetie. I’m right here. Take it easy. You’re safe."

Rachel’s eyes darted around the room in a blind panic, her chest heaving as the terrifying memory of the scorching car rushed back to her. "Lily... where is Lily? Is my baby okay?"

"She’s right down the hall in the neonatal intensive care unit," Diane assured her, tears pricking the corners of her own eyes. "Dr. Evans says her temperature has normalized, her kidneys are functioning, and she’s sleeping like an angel. She’s going to be just fine, Rachel. Because of you. You protected her."

Rachel closed her eyes, a massive, shuddering sob racking her frail body as the emotional floodgates finally broke open. "I didn't do it on purpose, Mom. I swear I didn't. Helen... Helen came over to 'help' with the baby. She brought me a cup of herbal tea. Ten minutes later, my limbs felt like lead. I couldn't keep my eyes open. The next thing I knew, I woke up inside the car, burning alive, and I couldn't even push the door open."

"I know, baby. I know everything," Diane murmured, stroking Rachel’s soft brown hair. "We have the security footage. Helen, Tyler, and Vanessa—they’re all going down."

Before Rachel could reply, the door to the hospital room swung open.

Detective Vance walked in, accompanied by a social worker holding a thick manila folder. Their faces were grim.

"Mrs. Mercer, Rachel," Vance greeted them quietly, pulling off his trench coat. "I wanted to give you an update before it hits the morning news. We executed the arrest warrants for Helen Mercer and Vanessa Hayes about two hours ago."

Rachel gripped the hospital sheets. "Did you get Helen?"

"We caught her at her country club in Belle Meade, sipping mimosas like nothing happened," Vance said with a dark scowl. "She tried to invoke diplomatic immunity through some corporate board connections, but our judge signed the remand orders within minutes. She’s currently sitting in a holding cell at the downtown precinct."

"And Vanessa?" Diane asked.

"Vanished," Vance admitted, pulling a tablet from his pocket. "She tipped off her accounts four hours before the warrant dropped. Her apartment was empty, her car was abandoned at the airport, and her passport shows a one-way ticket to Zurich booked under an alias. We’ve issued an Interpol red notice, but finding her internationally is going to take time."

"What about Tyler?" Rachel asked, her voice hardening with a sudden, fierce spike of adrenaline. "He knew. He had to know!"

"Tyler is claiming ignorance," Vance sighed. "He’s singing like a canary, trying to pin the entire plot on his mother and Vanessa to save his own skin. His lawyer is arguing that Tyler was at a corporate lunch when it happened. But..." Vance tapped the screen of his tablet. "...we found something else on Helen’s personal computer that changes the game entirely."

Vance turned the tablet toward them.

On the screen was a scanned copy of a legal document—a binding prenuptial agreement signed by Rachel and Tyler three years ago, alongside a notarized amendment dated just two weeks after Lily was born.

Rachel stared at the screen, her eyes widening in horror.

"What is that?" she whispered.

"It’s a custody and asset forfeiture clause," Vance explained grimly. "If Rachel were ever declared mentally incompetent or institutionalized due to a 'postpartum psychotic episode,' full custody of any offspring would automatically revert to the father, and all shared marital assets—including your family inheritance, Rachel—would be transferred to a trust managed exclusively by Helen Mercer."

Diane felt the blood rush to her ears. It wasn't just a cruel prank or a twisted way to force a divorce.

It was a financial assassination. Helen and Tyler had engineered the entire plot to steal Rachel’s multi-million-dollar inheritance left by her late father, using Lily as a disposable pawn in a high-stakes game of corporate greed.

"They planned this before Lily was even born," Rachel whispered, staring blankly at the wall, the final pieces of the horrifying puzzle snapping into place.

"Yes, they did," Diane said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it made Detective Vance look twice. "And now, we are going to tear their entire world down to the studs."
