Chapter 2 - Poison in the Veins

The intensive care unit smelled of rubbing alcohol, stale coffee, and ozone. The steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep of the heart monitor was the only sound keeping the crushing anxiety at bay as I sat beside Emily’s bed, holding her cold, pale hand in mine.

In the adjacent room, little Grace was sleeping inside an incubator, surrounded by specialized cooling blankets and pediatric monitors. The doctors had managed to stabilize her body temperature just in time to prevent permanent neurological damage, but the terror of how close we had come hovered over me like a dark storm cloud.

The door to Emily’s room swung open quietly. Dr. Harrison, a tall woman with sharp gray eyes and a solemn expression, walked in carrying a clipboard.

"Mrs. Miller," Dr. Harrison said softly, gesturing for me to step out into the hallway.

I gently let go of Emily’s hand and followed the doctor into the corridor.

"How is she, Doctor? Is the disorientation passing?" I asked, my voice tight with exhaustion.

"Physically, her core temperature has returned to normal, and we've rehydrated her," Dr. Harrison explained, looking down at the toxicology report attached to her clipboard. "However, the lab results from the blood drawn upon her arrival came back twenty minutes ago. We found high concentrations of liquid Diazepam combined with Scopolamine in her system."

My blood ran cold. "Scopolamine? The motion-sickness drug?"

"In high doses, it’s a powerful incapacitating agent," Dr. Harrison said grimly. "It causes extreme confusion, memory loss, paralysis, and loss of free will. Combined with the heat of the car, it was a lethal combination. If she had remained in that vehicle for another fifteen minutes, her heart would have stopped."

"It was intentional," I said, my knuckles turning white as I clenched my fists. "His name is Brandon Vance. He forced her to drink it."

"The hospital legal department has already been notified," Dr. Harrison assured me. "Detective Vance requested a certified copy of this toxicology screen. It constitutes hard forensic evidence of chemical assault."

Before I could reply, the heavy double doors at the end of the ICU hallway burst open.

A woman dressed in a pristine white designer suit walked in, her diamond rings catching the fluorescent lights. Behind her walked a tall, distinguished man in a tailor-made navy suit, his silver hair slicked back, carrying an alligator-skin briefcase.

It was Vanessa Vance and Tyler Vance—Brandon’s parents.

Vanessa’s face was a mask of cold, controlled fury as she strode toward us, her heels clicking loudly against the linoleum floor.

"Where is she?" Vanessa demanded, not even bothering to look at me, addressing Dr. Harrison directly. "Where is my daughter-in-law? I demand to see her immediate medical chart."

I stepped directly into her path, blocking her from Emily’s doorway.

"You don't take another step, Vanessa," I said, my voice quiet, flat, and absolute.

Vanessa finally condescended to look at me, her eyes narrowing behind her designer glasses. "Margaret. Stop playing the dramatic protective mother. Brandon is currently sitting in a holding cell because of your ridiculous accusations. My husband and I have brought our medical team and our legal counsel to put an end to this nonsense."

Tyler Vance stepped forward, pulling a gold fountain pen from his breast pocket. "Mrs. Miller, let's be reasonable. Brandon told us there was a tragic misunderstanding. Emily has been suffering from severe postpartum psychosis for weeks. She took those medications herself in a confused state, and Brandon was simply trying to calm her down before leaving for a business meeting."

I let out a bitter, cold laugh. "Is that the story you're going to stick to? Because the police have the video from my garage light. They saw your son pour the drug into her cup. They saw him lock her in a ninety-five-degree car. They saw him steal her phone and push her seat back."

Tyler’s calm facade cracked for a split second, his eyes flickering toward his wife. Vanessa’s jaw tightened, but she did not lose her composure.

"Videos can be interpreted in many ways, Margaret," Vanessa said smoothly, leaning in close so the doctor couldn't hear. "A good defense team can argue Brandon was attempting to lock the car to protect her from wandering off in a manic state. As for the trust fund—you know very well that the Vance Family Foundation controls eighty million dollars in regional assets. Do you really think a small-town magistrate is going to keep my son behind bars based on a grainy security tape?"

"Your son tried to murder my daughter and your own granddaughter for money, Vanessa," I whispered, every word laced with righteous hatred. "You can bring eighty million dollars, or eighty billion dollars. It won't buy him out of what's coming."

"We'll see about that," Tyler said coldly. "We have already filed an emergency petition in family court for temporary custody of Grace. A mother who is toxified and hospitalized is legally unfit to retain custody of an infant. A guardian ad litem will be appointed by morning."

My heart hammered against my ribs, a wave of panic washing over me. They were using their political leverage to steal Grace while Emily was bedridden.

"You won't touch that baby," I gasped.

"Try and stop us," Vanessa sneered, turning on her heel. "Tyler, call Judge Montgomery. Tell him we need the emergency custody order signed before eight AM."

They turned and walked down the hallway, their presence leaving a greasy, suffocating film over the quiet wing of the hospital.

I leaned against the wall, my breathing ragged. I felt small, helpless, and overwhelmed by the massive machinery of wealth and corruption standing against my family.

Then, a soft, raspy voice drifted from the open doorway behind me.

"Mom...?"

I turned instantly and rushed into the room. Emily’s eyes were open, clear, and filled with tears. She was weak, but the fog of the drug was slowly lifting.

"Emily!" I knelt beside her bed, taking her shaking hands in mine. "Oh, thank God. You're awake."

"I heard them..." Emily whispered, her voice trembling with raw fear. "They're going to take Grace... aren't they?"

"No," I said, kissing her forehead. "Not while I'm breathing."

"Mom... Brandon's phone..." Emily rasped, squeezing my fingers with surprising strength. "Before he forced me to drink that stuff... he dropped something under my seat. A second phone... his burner..."

I froze. "A burner phone?"

"He didn't realize it slipped out of his pocket when he reached over me," Emily said, her eyes burning with determination. "It's still in my car... under the driver's seat."

I looked at my daughter, seeing the fierce, unbreakable spirit of a mother who would burn the world down to protect her child.

"I'm going back to the car," I whispered.
