Chapter 5 - The Legal War

The deposition room at Thorne & Associates was small, quiet, and smelled of old paper and fresh coffee. A large mahogany table occupied the center of the room, around which sat Maya, Elena, Sarah Thorne, and on the opposite side, David, Rebecca, and their lead defense attorney, a ruthless corporate fixer named Richard Sterling.

It was three weeks after the disaster at the Winter Gala. David’s career was over, his name blacklisted from every financial institution in New England, but Rebecca was still fighting to save their remaining assets.

"Let’s be reasonable, Sarah," Richard Sterling said, leaning forward and tapping a thick stack of settlement proposals. "My clients are willing to offer Maya a generous lump-sum payment of five hundred thousand dollars, a quiet dissolution of the marriage, and the return of her personal belongings. In exchange, she will sign a comprehensive non-disclosure agreement and withdraw her civil lawsuit and her statements to the district attorney."

"Five hundred thousand dollars?" Sarah Thorne let out a short, sharp laugh that sounded like a gunshot. "Richard, do you take me for an amateur? My client’s forensic accountant—who happens to be her brilliant mother, Elena—has fully mapped the financial flow of Maya’s salary over the last three years."

Sarah slid a neatly bound financial ledger across the table.

"Your clients systematically routed four hundred and eighty thousand dollars of Maya’s direct earnings into Vance Holdings LLC, which Rebecca Vance then transferred to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands to avoid federal income tax," Sarah explained, her voice dropping into a dangerous, clinical register. "Furthermore, they forced Maya to live in a property she was told she co-owned, while charging her 'rent' that exceeded the fair market value by three hundred percent. That isn't a marriage, Richard. That is an organized financial criminal enterprise."

"That is a lie!" Rebecca hissed, her face pale, her knuckles white as she gripped the edge of the table. "Maya was a nobody when she married my son! We gave her a life! We gave her status! She owes us everything!"

"Silence, Rebecca," Richard Sterling warned his client, his voice tight. He turned back to Sarah. "What are your terms, then?"

Elena stood up from her chair, walking over to stand behind Maya. She placed her hands on her daughter’s shoulders, her presence an anchor of absolute strength.

"Our terms are non-negotiable," Elena said, her voice cutting through the tension in the room. "First, the immediate transfer of the deed of the Beacon Hill townhouse to Maya, free and clear of all liens and mortgages. Second, the full restitution of the four hundred and eighty thousand dollars stolen from her salary, plus interest. Third, a lifetime, irrevocable restraining order against both David and Rebecca Vance."

"And if we refuse?" David sneered, his eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic bravado. "You think the DA is actually going to prosecute me for pulling my wife’s hair? It’s a misdemeanor assault, at best. I’ll get probation and a slap on the wrist."

"Oh, David, you really are as stupid as your mother raised you to be," Sarah Thorne smiled, a cold, predatory expression. "We aren't just talking about misdemeanor assault anymore. My firm, in cooperation with Elena’s former colleagues at the State Department of Revenue, has just filed a formal complaint with the IRS regarding the offshore trust funds of Vance Holdings LLC."

Rebecca’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror. "The... the IRS?"

"Yes, Rebecca," Elena said, leaning down to look her in the eye. "While you were busy trying to buy off the witnesses from The Copper Lantern, I was busy analyzing your corporate tax filings from the last seven years. You didn't just hide Maya’s money in the Caymans. You hid over twelve million dollars of corporate revenue from your family’s real estate empire. The federal government has already frozen your primary accounts. By tomorrow morning, the federal grand jury will issue indictments for grand larceny, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud."

The silence that followed was absolute. Richard Sterling slowly closed his leather portfolio, stood up, and adjusted his tie. He looked down at Rebecca and David with an expression of cold pity.

"Richard?" Rebecca stammered, her voice shaking. "What are you doing? Tell them they can't do this!"

"I am withdrawing as your counsel, Rebecca," Richard said quietly. "My firm does not represent clients facing federal criminal indictments of this magnitude. I suggest you find a very good criminal defense attorney. You are going to need one."

As the door clicked shut behind the departing lawyer, David sank back into his chair, his face buried in his hands, his body trembling as the realization of his complete and total ruin finally settled into his bones.

Maya looked across the table at the man who had once held so much power over her, the man who had made her feel small, worthless, and broken.

She felt no anger. She felt no hatred.

May you like

She only felt a deep, beautiful, and overwhelming sense of peace.

"It’s over, David," Maya said softly, her voice filled with a quiet dignity. "We’re done."
