Chapter 5 - The Confession in the Dark

The holding room in the federal detention facility downtown was damp, smelling of old concrete and despair. The fluorescent light overhead buzzed with a low, irritating frequency.

Regina sat at the stainless steel table, her expensive silk robe stained, her hair tangled, staring at her hands as if she still couldn't comprehend how her meticulously crafted plan had collapsed in less than twelve hours.

The heavy iron door swung open.

Alejandro stepped inside. He didn't sit down. He simply stood by the door, his shadow stretching across the cold floor toward her.

Regina looked up, her eyes flashing with a desperate, venomous hatred. “You arrogant bastard,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “You think you’ve won, don't you? You think because you have money, you can throw me away like a broken toy?”

“I didn't throw you away, Regina,” Alejandro said calmly. “You poisoned my son. You tried to steal my life. And now, you’re going to spend the next thirty years reflecting on the difference between a real business empire and a con artist's hustle.”

“I hated him!” Regina suddenly screamed, slamming her fists against the steel table, her mask of sophistication completely incinerated by rage. “I hated the way you looked at him! Every time you spoke about Emiliano, it was like his mother was still sitting at the head of the table! I was just taking what was mine! If he had gone to the psychiatric clinic like a good little boy, none of this would have happened!”

Alejandro felt a cold wave of disgust wash over him. Not anger—just profound, freezing contempt.

“You underestimated two things, Regina,” Alejandro said quietly, turning the handle of the door to leave. “You underestimated a father’s willingness to tear down the world to protect his child. And you underestimated the courage of a young woman from Oaxaca who had the eyes to see what I was too blind to notice.”

He stepped out into the hallway, leaving her screaming curses into the empty concrete box where she belonged.
