Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

By 8:30 AM the next morning, the Manhattan financial district was buzzing with digital whispers. Within minutes of midnight, the automated dead man’s switch had triggered, releasing the complete financial dossier directly to the SEC, the New York State Attorney General’s office, and three major financial news outlets.

By sunrise, Sterling Global’s stock was in a freefall, trading down thirty-four percent before the opening bell even rang.

In the executive boardroom on the fortieth floor of the Sterling Tower, the atmosphere was absolute chaos. The mahogany table, usually a stage for corporate dominance, was now a panic room.

Wendy Sterling stood at the head of the table, her immaculate silver-blonde hair slightly disheveled, her designer suit wrinkled from a sleepless night. Her phone buzzed continuously on the polished wood. Around the table, senior executives and board members shouted over one another, demanding answers about the federal subpoenas that had been hand-delivered by federal agents just an hour prior.

“It’s a malicious fabrication!” Wendy shouted over the uproar, her face flushed with frantic rage. “An unauthorized hack by a disgruntled former employee! Legal is already drafting an injunction—!”

“Legal can draft whatever they want, Wendy, but the SEC doesn't issue asset freezing orders based on rumors,” a cold, smooth voice cut through the noise.

The heavy double doors at the end of the boardroom swung open.

Silence slammed over the room like a physical blow.

Dressed in a sharp charcoal tailored suit, walking with absolute, unyielding authority, Flynn Sterling-Vance stepped into the room. But it was the person walking beside him that made every single board member gasp in horror and disbelief.

Jessie Kane wore a crisp, midnight-blue professional blazer, her hair pulled back into a sleek chignon, her posture straight and unbreakable. The barefoot, bleeding girl from the storm was entirely gone. In her place stood the rightful eighteen-percent voting shareholder and primary heir of Sterling Global.

Wendy froze, her hand hovering over her phone. Color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking hollow and ancient. “You... you were supposed to be locked in the estate guesthouse. How are you—?”

“How am I alive?” Jessie finished for her, her voice ringing clear and steady across the silent boardroom. She walked straight toward the head of the table, stopping just three feet from her stepmother. “Did you really think that locking me in a dining room and chasing me with thugs would stop me from looking at your books, Wendy?”

“Guards!” Wendy shrieked, panic finally cracking her polished facade. “Throw her out! This woman is an interloper—!”

“There are no guards coming for her, Mrs. Sterling,” a sharp voice announced from the doorway.

Two federal agents in dark suits stepped into the room, badges gleaming under the recessed lighting. One of them held out an arrest warrant signed by a federal judge.

“Wendy Sterling, you are under arrest for securities fraud, wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement,” the lead agent declared, stepping forward with handcuffs ready.

As the cold steel cuffs clicked around Wendy’s wrists, her eyes locked onto Jessie with a venomous, desperate hatred. “You ruined everything! Your father built this company, and you just handed it over to a corporate raider!”

“I didn't hand it over to anyone,” Jessie replied coldly, her gaze meeting her stepmother’s without a flicker of doubt. “I reclaimed it.”
