Chapter 1 - The Silence of the SpotlightThe heavy sound-proofed door of the green room seemed to vibrate with the collective shock of everyone inside.

For a terrifying, crystal-clear second, the bustling energy of the morning show’s backstage evaporated entirely. The production assistants stopped pushing their rolling clothing racks. The hair and makeup artists froze with their brushes suspended mid-air. Even the floor manager, a seasoned veteran of live television who had seen every backstage tantrum and celebrity meltdown imaginable, lowered his clipboard and stared in stunned disbelief.
Olivia Bennett’s face, which had moments ago been twisted into a mask of smug condescension, drained completely of color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She looked like a ghost had just walked through her, or rather, like she had just realized she was standing in the path of an oncoming freight train of her own making.
My father’s jaw slackened. He turned his head slowly from Daniel Brooks—the charismatic, silver-haired host of Sunrise America—to look at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of horror and sudden, nauseating realization. My mother pressed a manicured hand over her mouth, her breath hitching in a sharp gasp.
"Wait," Olivia finally managed to choke out, her voice pitching up in an octave of absolute panic. "That... that’s not possible. Daniel, there must be some kind of mistake. She’s... she’s just Chloe. She freelances, she sits in her room all day, she doesn't even have a real career—"
Daniel Brooks didn't even look at Olivia. His eyes were fixed entirely on me, warm, respectful, and carrying a spark of genuine admiration. He stepped closer, offering me a reassuring smile that cut through the suffocating tension in the room.
"There is no mistake, Ms. Bennett," Daniel said, his voice smooth, authoritative, and ringing with absolute finality. "Our executive producer spent three weeks trying to secure this exclusive interview. The tech world has been buzzing for months about the mysterious founder who built CipherCore from a single laptop in a cramped apartment and just closed an eighty-million-dollar acquisition with global tech giant Apex Dynamics. And she’s standing right here."
The words landed like falling bricks.
Eighty million dollars.
For years, my family had measured success in flashy titles, corner offices, expensive corporate suits, and social media follower counts. Olivia was a junior marketing director at a mid-tier PR firm, but she had mastered the art of corporate buzzwords, posting glamorous LinkedIn selfies, and convincing my parents that she was a rising titan of industry. They bought into it entirely, showering her with praise, funding her luxury apartment upgrades, and treating her every promotion like a royal coronation.
And me? I was the quiet stepdaughter. The one who dropped out of law school after two semesters to "play with computers." The one who spent her twenties in oversized hoodies, eating takeout on a futon, typing lines of code into the wee hours of the morning while my parents whispered behind my back about my lack of ambition.
They thought I was failing. They thought I was a burden.
And now, the truth was hanging in the air, blindingly bright and utterly inescapable.
"Chloe?" my father whispered, his voice trembling as he took a tentative step toward me. His face, usually carved from corporate indifference, looked old and deeply fragile. "Eighty... eighty million? Is that... is that true?"
I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply looked at him—at the man who had spent every holiday toasting to Olivia’s minor achievements while ignoring my quiet milestones, the man who had stood by just moments ago and told me to leave so I wouldn't "create attention."
"You asked me to leave, Dad," I said quietly, my voice cutting through the thick silence like a scalpel. "You said I was embarrassing this family."
"Chloe, sweetheart, wait—your mother didn't mean that," my father stammered, his eyes darting frantically between me and the cameras that were beginning to angle in our direction. "We didn't know! You never told us! If we had known you were building something like this, of course we would have—"
"Celebrated?" I finished for him, a bitter, humorless smile touching the corners of my lips. "No, Dad. You would have tried to monetize it. You would have plastered Olivia’s face next to mine on family holiday cards and pretended she was your co-founder."
"Chloe!" Olivia shrieked, finding her voice at last, her face flushing an ugly, mottled crimson. "How dare you speak to our parents like that! You’re making a scene! You’re humiliating us on national television!"
"No, Olivia," Daniel Brooks interjected, his tone turning ice-cold as he stepped smoothly between us, effectively shielding me from her sputtering rage. "Your stepsister isn't humiliating anyone. She is about to walk onto my stage as the guest of honor for the most anticipated tech interview of the year. And you..."
Daniel paused, looking Olivia up and down with a look of profound pity and disgust.
"...you are standing in the way of a live broadcast. Security?"
Before Olivia could protest another word, two large security guards materialized at the edge of the green room.
"Please escort these guests to the visitor seating area in the audience," Daniel instructed smoothly. "And make sure they have a clear view of the monitors."
"No! You can't do this! I'm the guest! I'm the one with the scheduled segment!" Olivia screamed, thrashing as the guards gently but firmly guided her toward the exit.
My mother was weeping openly now, muttering my name like a prayer, while my father stood frozen, looking like the ground had literally vanished beneath his feet.
As they were led away, Daniel turned back to me, his professional demeanor instantly returning with a warm, encouraging grin.
"Are you ready, Ms. Abbott?" he asked gently. "We go live in three minutes."
May you like
I took a deep, steadying breath. I smoothed down the simple, elegant black blazer I had thrifted three years ago—back when I was eating instant ramen and coding for eighteen hours a day—and looked toward the brilliant lights of the studio stage.
"I’ve been ready for this my entire life," I said.
