Chapter 4 - The Ambush at Solitude Ridge

The estate erupted into organized chaos.

Rosa sprinted up the sweeping marble staircase, carrying Sophia in her arms. The child clutched her neck tightly, her eyes wide with sudden fear. Outside, the sound of roaring engines and shouting men echoed through the reinforced glass windows of the grand gallery.

“Mommy, who is outside?” Sophia whined, burying her face into Rosa’s collarbone. “Are they loud like thunder?”

“Just thunder, baby,” Rosa lied, her voice shaking violently as she pushed open the doors to their suite. “Just some thunder.”

Inside the bedroom, Rosa slammed the heavy deadbolt shut. She rushed to the nightstand, grabbed the semi-automatic pistol Dante had given her, and tucked it into the waistband of her sundress. She moved toward the window, pulling back the heavy velvet curtain by a fraction to peer down at the central courtyard.

What she saw turned her blood to ice.

Four black SUVs were parked in a semi-circle around the central fountain. Dozens of men in black tactical gear stood with rifles lowered, forming a perimeter. At the center stood Lorenzo, grinning arrogantly, standing beside an older, gray-haired man with a thick scar across his throat—Antonio Moretti, the head of the rival family that had ruled the north docks for thirty years.

And standing alone on the marble steps of the manor, facing twenty armed men without flinching, was Dante Falcone.

Beside him were only four guards, including Leo. Dante stood with his hands tucked into his pockets, utterly unbothered, looking down at the invaders as if they were nothing more than stray dogs barking at the gate.

Rosa couldn't hear what was being said, but the body language was unmistakable. Lorenzo took a step forward, gesturing aggressively toward the upper floors of the house—pointing directly toward the east wing where Rosa and Sophia were hiding.

Suddenly, movement in the hallway outside her bedroom door made Rosa spin around.

*Click.*

The handle jiggled.

Rosa’s breath hitched. She backed away toward the adjoining room, pulling Sophia behind her. “Leo?” she called out, her voice trembling. “Is that you?”

Silence answered.

Then came the heavy, sickening sound of a steel crowbar wedging into the jamb.

*SCREEECH.*

The reinforced lock groaned under immense hydraulic pressure. They weren't using keys. Someone was breaching the suite from the inside.

*The distraction,* Rosa realized with sickening clarity. *The courtyard was a diversion!*

Lorenzo hadn't come to negotiate or even challenge Dante face-to-face. He had brought Moretti to the courtyard to pin Dante down while a strike team infiltrated the manor to retrieve the flash drive and execute the child who had found it!

*CRACK.*

The heavy oak door splintered inward.

Rosa didn't scream. A surge of primal, maternal adrenaline flooded her veins, washing away her terror. She grabbed Sophia, scooped her up, and bolted through the connecting door into Carmela’s locked room.

She slammed the door shut, locking the internal bolt, and raced toward the radiator beneath the window.

“Sophia, listen to me,” Rosa hissed, dropping to her knees and frantically pulling open the secret baseboard compartment. “Crawl inside. All the way back. Don't make a sound. Don't cough. Don't whisper. No matter what you hear, you stay inside until Mr. Dante comes for you. Do you understand Mommy?”

Sophia’s hazel eyes filled with tears, her lower lip trembling, but seeing the fierce, unyielding look on her mother’s face, she nodded bravely. “I’ll be quiet like a mouse.”

“Good girl. I love you.”

Rosa pushed Sophia into the dark, narrow crawl space behind the radiator and slammed the false baseboard shut, kicking a decorative velvet footstool in front of it to conceal the seam.

Just as she stood up, the double doors of Carmela’s room were kicked off their hinges.

Wood shattered. Two men poured into the room, wearing dark balaclavas and tactical vests, their suppressed pistols raised.

Leading them was Marco, the gold-toothed enforcer. He didn't wear a mask. His cruel, pitted face broke into a sickening grin when he saw Rosa standing in the middle of the room, clutching the pistol with both hands.

“Well, look at the little maid,” Marco sneered, raising his weapon. “Lorenzo wants the flash drive, girl. Tell me where the brat hid it, and maybe I’ll let you leave through the back gate instead of carrying you out in a black bag.”

“Stay back!” Rosa shouted, cocking the slide just as Dante had shown her the night before. Her hands shook, but the barrel was aimed directly at Marco’s chest.

Marco laughed, a grating, wet sound. “You don't have the guts, sweetheart. You’re a scullery girl. You clean toilets. You don't—”

*BANG.*

Rosa pulled the trigger.

The recoil snapped violently through her wrists, sending a shockwave up her arms. The nine-millimeter bullet caught Marco square in the left shoulder. He shrieked in pain, stumbling backward against the doorframe, his weapon clattering to the floor.

“Kill the bitch!” Marco roared, clutching his bleeding shoulder.

The second gunman lunged forward, raising his submachine gun.

Rosa braced herself for the impact of lead, squeezing her eyes shut, preparing to die defending the radiator where her child hid.

*CRACK.*

A deafening roar ripped through the room—not from the gunman’s weapon, but from the open window behind Rosa.

The plate glass shattered inward in an explosion of crystalline shrapnel. A massive, dark figure vaulted through the broken frame, rolling across the Persian rug with terrifying speed.

It was Dante.

He had scaled the decorative stonework of the exterior terrace, bypassing the blocked hallways entirely. He rose from the floor like a demon summoned from the underworld, his tailored coat torn, his face smeared with soot and blood, his gray eyes blazing with a feral, murderous light.

Before the second gunman could adjust his aim, Dante closed the distance.

With a sickening *crunch*, Dante’s left hand caught the man’s throat, slamming him against the mahogany wall so hard the portrait of Carmela rattled on its hook. With his right hand, Dante drove a combat knife directly beneath the man’s ribs, twisting once, cold and methodical.

The gunman went limp, sliding to the floor in a pool of crimson.

Marco scrambled backward on his hands and knees, terror transforming his sneer into a pathetic whimper. “Dante—please! It was Lorenzo! Lorenzo made the deal with Moretti! I was just following orders!”

Dante didn't say a word. He stepped over the fallen body, his boots leaving bloody prints across the antique rug. He towered over Marco, his chest heaving, his presence so overwhelmingly lethal that the air in the room felt suffocating.

“You brought blood into my wife’s room,” Dante said, his voice a low, terrifying whisper that promised horrors beyond comprehension. “And you pointed a gun at the woman under my protection.”

“Dante, wait—” Marco shrieked.

Dante raised his weapon and pulled the trigger.

A single shot echoed through the shattered suite. Marco went still.

Silence descended upon the ruined room, broken only by the cold wind howling through the shattered window and the sound of Rosa’s ragged, sobbing breaths.

Rosa dropped the gun. Her knees gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor, trembling violently, shock washing over her like a tidal wave.

Dante dropped his weapon. He turned toward her, his terrifying fury vanishing the instant his eyes locked onto hers.

“Rosa,” he rasped.

He fell to his knees in front of her, reaching out with hands covered in blood and cordite, framing her face. He inspected her frantically, checking her neck, her arms, her chest.

“Did they hit you? Are you bleeding? Look at me, Rosa. Look at me!”

“I’m okay,” she choked out, tears finally spilling over her cheeks as she gripped his wrists. “I’m okay. Sophia—Sophia is behind the radiator. She’s safe!”

Dante let out a ragged, shuddering exhale, pulling Rosa violently against his chest.

He wrapped his massive arms around her, burying his face into the crook of her neck, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe. Rosa buried her face in his shoulder, sobbing against the rough wool of his torn coat, clinging to him as if he were the only solid thing in a collapsing universe.

“I heard the shot from the courtyard,” Dante whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he had buried for eighteen months. “I thought I lost you. I thought they took you too.”

Rosa pulled back slightly, looking into his bruised, blood-streaked face. “You came for us.”

“I will always come for you,” Dante vowed, his gray eyes burning with an intensity that stole the breath from her lungs.

He didn't hesitate. He leaned in, closing the distance, and captured her mouth with his.

May you like

The kiss was wild, desperate, and devastatingly passionate. It tasted of copper, rain, and raw salvation. Dante’s hands tangled into Rosa’s hair, pulling her closer, pouring all the grief, the fury, and the sudden, overwhelming love he had tried so hard to deny into the heat of their mouths. Rosa kissed him back with equal fervor, winding her arms around his neck, giving herself over completely to the man who ruled the dark, knowing she would never be free of him—and never wanting to be.
