Chapter 2 - The First Brick FallsBy eight o'clock on Sunday morning, the rain had cleared, leaving the air crisp and cold over the suburban enclave of Oakridge.

In the master bedroom of his four-bedroom brick colonial, Robert Miller sat at his mahogany desk, drinking black coffee and looking over his morning emails. Robert was the proud founder and managing partner of Miller & Sons Commercial Construction, a firm that relied heavily on municipal contracts, suburban development permits, and a carefully cultivated image of family-oriented integrity.
Beside him, Diane was applying lipstick at her vanity, complaining loudly about the evening before.
"I had to throw away the entire bowl of pasta salad Clara brought," Diane grumbled, adjusting her pearl earrings. "And the way she yelled at Vanessa! Absolutely unhinged. She acted like Vanessa did it on purpose! Vanessa was just defending Caleb's toys. You know how sensitive Caleb is."
"I'll handle Ethan today," Robert said smoothly, taking a sip of coffee. "I'll call him into the office. I'll tell him Clara needs to apologize to Vanessa for creating such a scene in front of the neighbors. If Clara doesn't control her temper, she won't be welcome at Thanksgiving."
A loud, thunderous knock echoed through the house, rattling the glass in the front entry doors.
Robert frowned, looking at his watch. "Who the hell is knocking like that at eight in the morning?"
He walked downstairs, pulling open the heavy oak front door with an annoyed expression. "Can I help—"
He froze.
Standing on his porch were four uniformed officers from the Oakridge Police Department, accompanied by two unmarked police cruisers and a forensic unit van parked in his driveway. Standing at the front of the group was Detective Miller, flanked by two attorneys holding official court documents.
"Robert Miller?" Detective Miller asked coldly.
"Yes... what is the meaning of this?" Robert demanded, his voice instinctively rising in volume to mask his sudden spike of anxiety. "Do you know who I am? I'm on the town planning board!"
"We have an arrest warrant for Vanessa Miller for felony child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, and reckless endangerment," Detective Miller declared, stepping past Robert into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. "We also have a search warrant for the premises to seize the ceramic mug, clothing evidence, and any outdoor surveillance footage from yesterday afternoon."
Diane came running down the stairs, her lipstick smudged, her hands clutching her silk robe. "What is going on?! Robert, do something!"
At that exact moment, a black Mercedes sedan pulled into the driveway behind the police cars. Mark and Vanessa stepped out, holding coffee cups from a local bakery, having dropped four-year-old Caleb off at a playdate.
"What's going on here?" Mark shouted, running up the walkway. "Dad, why are the police here?"
Detective Miller turned toward the driveway. "Vanessa Miller?"
Vanessa stopped in her tracks, her smug smile instantly vanishing. "Yes? What is this?"
Before she could process what was happening, two officers stepped up behind her, grabbed her arms, and pulled them firmly behind her back. The metallic clack-clack of handcuffs echoed across the manicured lawn.
"Vanessa Miller, you are under arrest for felony assault and child abuse," the officer read off a card. "You have the right to remain silent..."
"Get your hands off me!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing against the restraint. "Mark! Mark, do something! They're hurting me! Robert, call the chief of police! Call him right now!"
Mark rushed forward to push an officer away, but Detective Miller grabbed him by the chest, shoving him back. "Interfere with an arrest, sir, and you'll be in the back of the cruiser right next to her!"
"This is insane!" Robert roared, his face turning an angry shade of purple. "My son-in-law is Ethan Miller! My family built half this town! I am calling my legal team!"
Robert pulled out his phone and frantically pressed a speed-dial button for his lead corporate attorney, Harold Vance (no relation to my father).
"Harold! It's Robert! I need you at the station right now! The police just handcuffed Vanessa in my driveway over some absurd family misunderstanding—"
"Robert," Harold’s voice cut in, sounding frantic and breathless. "Forget Vanessa. Where are you right now?"
"I'm at home! What do you mean forget—"
"Robert, look at your email! Look at the news!" Harold shouted over the phone. "Ten minutes ago, the State Department of Transportation suspended all three of your public infrastructure contracts pending a grand jury investigation into fraud and safety violations! The Bank of New York just froze your commercial line of credit! And... oh god, Robert..."
Robert felt the blood drain completely from his face. "What? What else?!"
"A formal acquisition tender was just filed for Miller & Sons Construction," Harold gasped. "Someone bought eighty percent of your secondary debt overnight through a shell corporation. They're foreclosing on your equipment leases at nine o'clock!"
Robert’s hand went limp. The phone slipped from his fingers, hitting the hardwood floor of his foyer with a dull thud.
Through the open front door, he watched his daughter-in-law being forced into the back seat of a police cruiser, her screams muffled by the reinforced glass. He looked up and saw a black SUV parked across the street.
The rear window of the SUV slowly rolled down.

Sitting in the leather interior was my father, Arthur Vance, wearing dark sunglasses, reading a leather-bound briefing document. Beside him sat I, holding a cup of tea, looking directly into Robert’s terrified, pale eyes.
I didn't smile. I didn't wave. I simply raised my tea cup slightly toward him in a silent, icy toast before the window rolled back up, and the SUV smoothly pulled away.
