Chapter 5 - Exposing the Truth

The courtroom erupted into a low murmur of shock as the prisoner took the stand.
It was Leo Vance—no relation to Marcus—the lead mechanic who had worked at Uncle Ray’s auto repair shop for over a decade. He looked broken, pale, and thoroughly defeated, his hands cuffed in front of him.
“State your name and occupation for the record,” Judge Althaus commanded, leaning forward.
“My... my name is Leo Briggs,” the man stammered, casting a terrified glance toward Uncle Ray, who was now gripping the edge of the defense table so tightly his knuckles were stark white. “I was the head mechanic at Ray’s Auto Repair in Schaumburg.”
Marcus stepped forward, holding a thick electronic tablet. “Mr. Briggs, direct your attention to the night of October 14th—three months ago. Were you at the shop after hours?”
“Yes,” Leo whispered, his voice trembling. “Ray kept me late. He... he told me to bring out the hydraulic brake line cutter from the heavy machinery locker.”
Across the room, Charles Sterling jumped to his feet, objecting frantically. “Objection, Your Honor! This is wildly speculative hearsay from a convicted felon trying to cut a plea deal with federal prosecutors!”
“Overruled, Mr. Sterling,” Judge Althaus snapped, her eyes fixed on the witness. “Let the witness speak.”
Leo swallowed hard, tears welling in his eyes. “It wasn't hearsay. Ray stood right behind me while I did it. He told me Robert Bennett’s SUV was scheduled for a cross-state trip the next morning. He said... he said Robert was auditing the shop’s financial books and was about to uncover embezzlement. Ray said if Robert didn't make it to St. Louis, the insurance payout would clear the shop’s debts and give him control of the family trust.”
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery.
Uncle Ray leaped to his feet, his face purple with rage. “He’s lying! The junkie is lying to save his own skin! Your Honor, this is a conspiracy!”
“Sit down, Mr. Bennett, or I will have the bailiff remove you in handcuffs!” Judge Althaus bellowed, banging her gavel with deafening force. Two bailiffs immediately stepped behind Ray, forcing him back down into his chair.
Marcus didn't stop there. He walked over to the judge’s bench and handed up a second file.
“Your Honor, in addition to Mr. Briggs’ confession and forensic tool-mark matches recovered from the crash site, we have subpoenaed the encrypted offshore bank accounts linked to Raymond Bennett,” Marcus stated clearly. “Forty-eight hours after the fatal crash, two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in insurance payout funds were wired directly from a corporate holding account managed by Ray into an offshore shell corporation in the Cayman Islands.”
The evidence was absolute. Unbreakable. Mathematical proof of murder and greed.
Judge Althaus opened the financial portfolio, her expression turning into a mask of cold, unyielding fury. She looked past the legal teams, fixing her gaze squarely on Uncle Ray, who was now trembling violently in his seat, his arrogant suburban facade completely shattered.
“Raymond Bennett,” Judge Althaus said, her voice ringing clear and cold across the silent courtroom. “Based on the overwhelming evidence of premeditated homicide, grand larceny, and conspiracy presented before this court, I am ordering your immediate arrest.”
She slammed her gavel down one final time.
“Bailiff, take the defendant into custody. No bail.”

Ray cast one last, venomous glare toward Lily across the courtroom, but Lily didn't look away. She didn't shrink back. For the first time in her life, she stood tall, her head held high, staring down the man who had tried to destroy her family—and watching him fall.
