Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Blood and Gold

The air inside the room turned to ice.
Beatrice turned her head slowly, her calculated, icy eyes fixing onto Evelyn with a mixture of disbelief and sheer, venomous rage. "Evelyn... what did you do?"
Evelyn took a white cloth napkin from the table, calmly wiped the salad dressing from her collarbone, and tossed the soiled linen directly into the center of Beatrice’s crystal soup bowl.
"I didn't do anything, Beatrice," Evelyn said softly, stepping around her chair. "You and your son did it all by yourselves. I simply kept the receipts."
Agent Vance gestured to his team. "Federal marshals are currently executing simultaneous search warrants at the Ashcroft Holdings corporate tower in Manhattan, the estate in Greenwich, and the private dockyards in Newark. Every server, drive, and paper ledger has been seized."
"Seized?!" Graham yelled, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic panic. "On what grounds?! Evelyn, tell them to stop! Tell them this is a misunderstanding!"
"Grounds?" Agent Vance pulled a printed federal indictment from his briefcase. "Corporate espionage, grand larceny, tax fraud, money laundering totaling ninety-four million dollars, and the illegal transfer of federally protected biomedical patents belonging to the Harper Estate."
Graham's knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the dining table to keep himself from falling. His cousin Julian, who had been considering taking a photo seconds earlier, quietly tried to slip his phone into his pocket and slide toward the side exit.
"Don't move, sir," a female federal agent warned, placing a hand on her sidearm. "The entire building is surrounded. No one leaves this room until identity checks and preliminary subpoenas are served."
Beatrice stood up, her regal composure completely collapsing into hysterical anger. Her golden bangles rattled as she pointed a shaking finger at Evelyn. "You ungrateful little pauper! We brought you into this family! You were nothing! A schoolteacher’s daughter with a ruined family legacy! We gave you a name! We gave you luxury! And you betray us like a snake in the grass?!"
Evelyn walked slowly toward Beatrice. She stopped less than two feet away, looking down into her mother-in-law's furious, wrinkled face.
"You didn't bring me into this family, Beatrice," Evelyn whispered, her voice so sharp it felt like a razor against skin. "You married your son to me because six years ago, my father’s research firm was on the verge of a major therapeutic breakthrough. You knew my father was dying. You knew I was grieving. You instructed Graham to court me, to romance me, to make me feel safe so I would sign over power of attorney to him while I was broken."
Beatrice’s jaw worked silently, but no sound came out.
"For eight years," Evelyn continued, her gray eyes burning with cold fire, "you treated me like a servant. You humiliated me at charity galas. You made me sit at the back tables. You made your relatives laugh at my clothes, my background, my manners. You kicked my chair tonight thinking I was the same weak girl who cried in the bathroom during my first Thanksgiving here."
Evelyn reached out and gently plucked the piece of lettuce from her hair, dropping it onto Beatrice’s polished shoe.
"I didn't stay because I was weak, Beatrice," Evelyn said softly. "I stayed until I found every hidden ledger, every offshore account, and every forged signature. I stayed until I had enough evidence to put you, your son, and your corrupt company into the ground forever."
Graham rushed around the table, falling to his knees beside Evelyn, his hands grasping frantically at the hem of her stained dress.
"Evie... Evie, please!" Graham sobbed, tears spilling over his cheeks, ruining his handsome, polished look. "I love you! You know I love you! My mother made me do it! She controlled the money! She forced me to sign those patent transfers! I was just trying to protect our future! Please, talk to the agents! Tell them we can fix this internally!"
Evelyn looked down at her husband—the man who had covered his mouth with a napkin and laughed while she fell to the floor minutes earlier.

She pulled her dress out of his trembling grip.
"Agent Vance," Evelyn said, stepping away without looking back. "He’s all yours."
