Chapter 5 - Building a New Foundation

Six months later.
The warm summer sun glistened off the surface of Lake Michigan. The sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue, and the air smelled of sweet pine and freshwater.
Standing on the wooden deck of a beautiful, single-story lake house was a brand-new, fully accessible ramp, lined with vibrant pots of yellow sunflowers and red tulips.
I sat in a comfortable wicker chair, sipping an iced tea, watching the quiet ripples of the water.
After the trial concluded, Jonah's entire estate—including his commercial properties, bank accounts, and personal wealth—was seized under federal forfeiture laws and auctioned off. The proceeds were distributed among the victims' families, with a substantial portion awarded to Chloe as compensation for her years of suffering.
With that settlement, along with my savings, we bought this quiet lake house—a sanctuary where Chloe could move freely, paint, and live without fear.
The back screen door slid open quietly.
Chloe walked out onto the deck. She wasn't using her forearm crutches. She was using a lightweight, custom-built walker that her physical therapist had recommended three months ago. Her posture was confident, her head held high, and the deep scars on her face had faded into faint, silvery lines that only added to her beauty.
"You're thinking again, Maya," Chloe teased softly, sitting down in the matching wicker chair beside me.
I smiled, looking at her with an overwhelming sense of pride. "Just admiring the view, kiddo. How was your art class online today?"
"Amazing," Chloe beamed, her eyes sparkling with life. "The instructor said my landscape painting was good enough to enter into the regional gallery show in Chicago next month."
"I knew it!" I grinned, reaching over to squeeze her hand. "We're going to need to buy you a fancy dress for the opening."
Chloe laughed—a rich, genuine sound that filled the warm afternoon air. It was a sound I hadn't heard in years, a sound that made every sleepless night, every tear, and every battle worth fought.
A black sedan pulled into the gravel driveway behind the house.
Marcus stepped out, wearing a casual polo shirt and carrying a large box of fresh Italian pastries from the bakery in town.
"Hey, team!" Marcus called out, walking up the wooden ramp with a broad smile. "I brought cannolis!"
"Marcus!" Chloe cheered, reaching into the box before he even set it down on the outdoor table. "You're officially my favorite detective."
"Hey!" I feigned outrage, raising an eyebrow. "I'm standing right here!"
"Sorry, Maya," Chloe giggled, taking a big bite of a pastry. "He brought chocolate chips. You brought iced tea. The math doesn't lie."
Marcus chuckled, pulling up a chair and taking a seat beside us. "How are the preparations for the foundation coming along, Maya?"
I pulled a small leather-bound folder from my lap, opening it to reveal the registration documents for THE CHLOE VANCE ADVOCACY NETWORK—a non-profit organization Chloe and I had founded to provide emergency housing, legal representation, and physical therapy grants for disabled victims of domestic abuse.
"Everything is signed," I said, my heart swelling with emotion. "We open our first shelter in Detroit next month."

Chloe reached over, taking my hand tightly in hers. "We're going to make sure no one ever feels as helpless as I did, Maya. We're going to give them their voices back."
"You already gave them their voices back, Chloe," Marcus said gently, looking at her with deep respect. "Your bravery put a monster away forever."
