Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

By midnight, the glittering illusion of Julian Vance’s empire had dissolved into a sterile interrogation room at a federal detention facility in San Diego.
Julian sat slumped in a bolted metal chair, his expensive Italian suit wrinkled and damp, his wrists still cuffed to the table. Across from him sat two federal prosecutors and a stony-faced military investigator.
“Let’s review the timeline, Mr. Vance,” the lead prosecutor said calmly, sliding a thick dossier across the metal table. “Six months ago, your tech firm, Vance Innovations, was three weeks away from bankruptcy. An anonymous angel investor deposited ten million dollars into your corporate accounts, saving your company from liquidation. Are you aware of who provided those funds?”
Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. “I... I was told it was a venture capital syndicate out of Zurich.”
“It was a private family trust managed by Genevieve Sterling-Vance,” the prosecutor stated smoothly. “Your wife funded your entire corporate ascension using her personal inheritance. Furthermore, financial audits conducted over the last twelve hours reveal that you systematically diverted company funds to purchase luxury assets, real estate, and designer gifts for your mistress, Victoria Hayes.”
“It’s a marital dispute!” Julian protested, his voice cracking with desperate panic. “We can settle this in civil court! Divorce lawyers can handle asset division! You have no right to hold me under military jurisdiction—”
“You committed an act of maritime terrorism and attempted murder against the daughter of a sitting member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,” the military investigator interrupted softly, leaning forward. “Under federal statute and military code, your civilian rights were suspended the moment you towed a pregnant woman behind a watercraft with lethal intent. You aren't going to a civil courtroom, Mr. Vance. You’re going to a maximum-security federal penitentiary where you will spend the rest of your natural life reflecting on your financial and personal miscalculations.”

Julian stared at the documents, trembling violently. The board of directors had already voted unanimously to strip him of his CEO title. His assets had been frozen, seized under emergency national security provisions. Victoria was being held in an adjacent cell, facing identical charges with no hope of bail.
The brilliant future he had planned—built on betrayal, ambition, and the destruction of the woman who loved him—was gone.
