Chapter 4 - The Waking Giant

By 8:00 AM, the morning sun was casting long, pale beams of light across the reinforced security windows of the fifth-floor VIP recovery suite at St. Jude Memorial.

Stefano Marquetti had been moved from the surgical suite thirty minutes earlier. He was still unconscious, hooked up to a battery of heart monitors, IV drips, and a mechanical ventilator tube taped securely across his mouth. His skin was the color of old parchment, but the rhythmic, steady beep of the cardiac monitor provided a reassuring soundtrack to the quiet room.

Alice sat in a high-backed leather chair beside the bed, her eyes bloodshot, a lukewarm cup of black coffee cooling on the side table. She hadn't slept in over twenty-four hours. Her scrubs were still wrinkled and stained, but she refused to leave her post until she saw him open his eyes.

The door opened with a soft click.

Danny entered, carrying a fresh, steaming cup of coffee and a brown paper bag from a local bakery. He placed them quietly on the table without a word, pulling up a chair and sitting down beside her.

“You should go home, Alice,” Danny said softly. “You’ve been here all night.”

“I’m staying until he wakes up,” she replied simply, wrapping both hands around her cold coffee cup. “I need to know that Voss and Cole didn't leave anything behind in his system.”

“Vance personally supervised the blood panels three hours ago,” Danny reassured her, leaning back. “The tox screen is clean. Voss and Cole are currently locked in a secure holding facility down in Providence, singing like canaries about Julian Reed and the syndicate financing structure. Reed skipped the country on a private jet out of Logan at 6:00 AM, but our people are already tracking his tail in Zurich. He won't last forty-eight hours.”

Alice let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension in her shoulders finally beginning to ease. “And Nero?”

A genuine, warm smile broke across Danny’s rugged face. “Nero is currently holding the entire ground floor of this hospital hostage. The administration wanted to put him in an animal control van, so I stationed four of our best guys at the front desk to make sure nobody even looks at him funny. He’s lying right outside the private elevator doors, refusing to let anyone upstairs unless they smell like coffee and nurse scrubs.”

Alice chuckled—a tired, soft sound that felt good after the nightmare of the past twelve hours. “He’s a very loyal dog.”

“He knows who his friends are,” Danny said, his eyes shifting from the monitor to Alice’s face. “Just like his master.”

Before Alice could reply, a low, rasping sound came from the hospital bed.

Both of them snapped their attention toward Stefano.

The powerful crime boss’s eyelids fluttered. His fingers twitched against the crisp white cotton sheets. A low groan rumbled deep in his chest as he fought against the lingering effects of the anesthesia and the ventilator tube.

“Stefano?” Danny leaned forward, placing a hand gently on his boss’s shoulder. “Easy, boss. Take it slow.”

Stefano’s dark amber eyes—the exact same shade as Nero’s—slowly blinked open. They were cloudy, bloodshot, and heavy with pain, but as they focused on the room, the unmistakable intelligence and predatory awareness returned with startling speed.

He tried to sit up, coughing weakly against the breathing tube.

“Don’t move,” Alice said, stepping up to the bed and pressing her hand gently against his chest to keep him flat. “Your ribs are wired, and you’ve just come off a six-hour surgical repair for a lacerated liver and severe hypovolemic shock. If you pull your stitches, I’m personally going to let Nero handle your physical therapy.”

Stefano froze.

His hazy gaze shifted slowly from Danny to the exhausted, soot-stained young nurse standing beside his bed.

He couldn't speak because of the tube, but his eyes searched her face with an intense, piercing scrutiny. He remembered the fire. He remembered the smoke. And deep in the fog of his unconscious mind, he remembered a massive mastiff pressing its face into open, empty hands on a ruined marble floor.

Slowly, painfully, Stefano raised his right hand and touched the back of Alice’s hand where it rested against his chest.

He didn't squeeze hard. He didn't have the strength.

He simply held her hand for three seconds, his eyes conveying a message that needed no words.

Thank you.

Alice gently turned her fingers and squeezed his hand back. “You’re welcome, Mr. Marquetti. Now, let’s get this breathing tube out so you can tell me why your security team lets arsonists walk right into your conservatory.”
