Chapter 3 - Poisoned VeilsWhile I was nine miles above the Atlantic on a red-eye flight back to John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York City was becoming a battleground.

Grant’s pristine life was disintegrating at terrifying speed.
Following the viral explosion of the chapel video, Child Protective Services (CPS) in Manhattan received over four hundred calls demanding a welfare check on Lily. By Sunday afternoon, two CPS caseworkers, accompanied by NYPD officers, knocked on the door of Grant’s luxury apartment in Tribeca.
Grant opened the door in his silk bathrobe, his eyes bloodshot, holding a glass of scotch.
"Mr. Reed?" Senior Caseworker Evelyn Vance said, holding up her badge. "We are here to perform an emergency welfare assessment on your daughter, Lily Reed."
"This is ridiculous!" Grant spat, attempting to block the doorway. "My ex-wife is waging a smear campaign against me! You have no legal right to be here!"
"Mr. Reed, we have a court-authorized order for an immediate physical and emotional evaluation based on public evidence of child endangerment and psychological coercion," Officer Miller stated firmly, placing a hand on his belt. "Step aside, or you will be arrested for obstruction."
Inside the apartment, the scene was far from the picture-perfect life Grant always projected.
Designer wedding presents lay scattered across the marble foyer, half-unpacked. In the master bedroom, Vanessa was furiously packing three large suitcases, shouting at Grant’s mother over the phone.
"I didn't sign up for this!" Vanessa screamed, tossing a pair of designer heels into her bag. "My modeling agencies are dropping me! The press is calling me a child abuser! I’m leaving!"
"Vanessa, please!" Grant shouted, rushing into the bedroom, ignoring the CPS workers behind him. "You can't leave now! It makes us look guilty!"
"We are guilty, Grant!" Vanessa shrieked, turning on him with venom. "You lied to me! You told me Eleanor was a crazy, unstable mother who abandoned those kids! You forced that little girl to wear that dress and rehearse those lines for three weeks! You told her if she messed up, you’d throw her stuffed animals in the trash!"
Caseworker Evelyn Vance stood in the doorway, quietly taking notes on her digital tablet.
"Where is Lily right now, Mr. Reed?" Vance asked, her voice dangerously calm.
Grant spun around, realizing his horrific mistake. "She’s... she’s in her bedroom. Resting."
When Vance opened the door to Lily’s room, she found the six-year-old sitting under her bed, clutching her knees to her chest, exactly as Noah had found her months before.
Lily looked up with wide, frightened eyes. "Are you going to take me to Mommy now?"
My plane landed in New York at 6:00 AM Monday morning.
I was met at the gate not by police officers with an arrest warrant, but by Arthur Sterling’s private driver.
Arthur Sterling—Grant’s primary corporate backer and the man who had stood up in the chapel—had called me during my layover in Dublin. He had been deeply horrified by what he witnessed at the altar. Arthur was a man of old-fashioned integrity, and he felt personally responsible for having funded Grant’s lifestyle while my children suffered.
He had arranged for New York’s premier family law attorney, Eleanor’s namesake—Evelyn Mercer—to represent me pro bono.
Two hours later, I sat in Evelyn Mercer’s high-rise office overlooking Central Park. Mercer was a legend in Manhattan legal circles: sixty-one years old, silver-haired, tailored in a sharp navy suit, with eyes like steel traps.
"Here is where we stand, Clara," Mercer said, placing a thick folder on the glass table between us. (She used my full legal name, Clara Eleanor). "Grant filed an emergency petition at 8:00 PM last night to revoke your custody rights, claiming you manipulated Lily into giving false statements."
"It’s a lie!" I blurted out. "I was over the Atlantic! I hadn't spoken to Lily in thirty-six hours!"
"I know it’s a lie," Mercer said with a sharp, lethal smile. "And more importantly, CPS knows it’s a lie. The caseworker’s emergency report from last night details severe psychological distress, environmental instability, and verbal admissions from Vanessa legal representatives confirming Grant’s coercion."
"Where is Lily now?" My heart pounded against my ribs. "Is she with him?"
"CPS placed her in temporary emergency custody at a secure facility last night because Grant was deemed emotionally volatile," Mercer explained. "There is an emergency hearing at Manhattan Family Court at 2:00 PM today before Judge Anthony Harris."
"Judge Harris?" I gasped, my blood running cold. "No... no, Mercer, Harris was the judge who handled our initial divorce! He was charmed by Grant! He believed every word Grant said!"
Mercer leaned forward, resting her elbows on the desk. "Judge Harris is a man who hates one thing more than anything else in the world, Clara."

"What’s that?"
"Being made a fool of," Mercer replied softly. "And Grant Reed made him look like an absolute idiot on national television."
