Chapter 4 - The Brink of ChaosEvan Shaw spun around so fast he nearly lost his balance, his heavy boots scuffing against the slick concrete floor.

He dropped the satellite phone. It clattered against the floor, its speaker still emitting a faint, tinny stream of Thomas Vale’s frantic voice: "Shaw? Shaw, what's happening down there?!"
Evan stared at Rachel. His eyes were wild, bloodshot, and rimmed with sweat. The sledgehammer rested in his right hand, its iron head resting heavy against the floor.
"Rachel," Evan said, his voice raspy from smoke and heat. "You shouldn't be here."
"Put the ledger down, Evan," Rachel repeated, holding the heavy iron pipe wrench with both hands, her posture low and balanced. "The police know everything. Sarah Martinez has the memory card from Room 3. They’re surrounding the building right now."
Evan looked at her for three agonizing seconds. Then, a slow, terrifying smile spread across his damp face.
"No, they aren't," Evan said quietly. "If the police were outside, you wouldn't be standing in a boiler room with a pipe wrench. You came back alone because you're a nurse. You care too much about that old woman upstairs."
Evan lifted the sledgehammer with both hands.
"I’ve spent eight years building this setup, Rachel," Evan sneered, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. "Do you have any idea how much money a live feed from a high-profile surgical unit pulls in from private collectors overseas? Vale thought we were just collecting political insurance. He didn't even know half of where the data was going!"
"You're sick," Rachel spat, taking a careful step backward, keeping the iron wrench between them.
"I’m a businessman," Evan barked, and suddenly he lunged.
He swung the sledgehammer in a wide, horizontal arc. The heavy iron head whistled through the humid air, smashing into a copper steam pipe beside Rachel’s head with a deafening CRACK.
Hot steam hissed violently from the ruptured pipe, filling the air with a blinding white cloud of scalding vapor.
Rachel ducked low, her eyes burning from the heat. She couldn't see Evan through the dense steam, but she heard his heavy boots charging across the concrete.
She rolled to her left just as the sledgehammer slammed into the floor where she had been standing, sending sparks flying across the dark tile.
Rachel scrambled to her feet, lunged through the steam, and swung the iron pipe wrench with all the strength in her shoulders.
The heavy iron tool struck Evan hard across his right shoulder blade.
Evan let out a guttural scream, dropping the sledgehammer as he stumbled backward into a row of metal shelving. Paint cans, oil filters, and spare parts rained down around him with a clattering roar.
Rachel didn't waste a second. She sprinted past him toward the open wall safe, reached her hand into the briefcase, and grabbed the thick black ledger book.
"Stop her!" a voice screamed from the far doorway.
Rachel turned.
Standing at the entrance of the boiler room was Thomas Vale. He was no longer wearing his polished charcoal suit jacket. His tie was undone, his white shirt stained with sweat, his eyes wide with a frantic, unhinged panic. Behind him stood two of his private security guards, their hands reaching for holstered Tasers.
"Give me the book, Rachel!" Vale shouted, his voice cracking as he stepped into the humid room. "You don't understand what you're doing! That ledger contains names that will bring down half the judiciary in this state! If that information gets out, people die!"
"Then they die," Rachel said, backing toward the rear exit door that led to the hospital's underground parking ramp. "Because you don't get to sell people's lives from the shadows anymore, Vale."
"Take her!" Vale ordered the guards.
The two security guards lunged forward through the steam.
Before they could reach her, the heavy iron service door behind Rachel was kicked wide open with a violent metallic bang.
"POLICE! DON'T MOVE!"
Detective Sarah Martinez burst through the doorway, flanked by six armed officers from the Chicago Police Department’s Tactical Response Unit, their weapons raised, their tactical flashlights cutting through the thick steam.
"DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!" Sarah shouted, her voice echoing like thunder through the concrete chamber.
The two security guards instantly threw their hands into the air, dropping to their knees on the wet floor.
Evan Shaw, clutching his ruined shoulder, collapsed against the wall, weeping from pain and defeat.
Thomas Vale froze. He looked at Sarah’s badge, then at the armed officers, and finally at Rachel Morgan, who stood firm in the center of the room, holding the black ledger tightly against her chest.
Vale’s polished, aristocratic mask shattered into millions of tiny, pathetic pieces. He dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he raised them slowly into the air.
Sarah Martinez walked up to Rachel, placing a warm, steady hand on her shoulder.
"You okay, Rachel?" Sarah asked softly.

Rachel took a long, deep breath, looking down at the black ledger in her arms, and then at Thomas Vale kneeling in the dust at her feet.
"I’m fine," Rachel said, her voice ringing with absolute clarity. "Now let's go get Mrs. Porter."
